Accounting Manager

About the role

This engagement begins as a 1099 independent contractor arrangement, with the option to transition to full-time employment. Each engagement is unique. Rather than the routine, maintenance-driven work that defines most internal accounting roles, you'll be brought in for purposeful, high-impact projects that challenge you to think critically and perform at your best. Because you work on one engagement at a time on a full-time basis, you're fully immersed in each client's environment, developing deep expertise across industries, systems, and business situations that most accountants never encounter in a traditional role.

As an Accounting Manager at Promentrs, you will serve as a trusted, embedded accounting resource for our clients, functioning as a senior member of their accounting team while representing the quality and standards of Promentrs. You'll own the day-to-day accounting function, lead close processes, and provide the kind of thoughtful, organized financial management that gives executives the clarity to make better decisions.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
• Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP
• Maintain the general ledger, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and trial balance review
• Perform and oversee bank reconciliations and inter-company eliminations
• Generate financial reports and internal management packages that are clear, accurate, and decision-ready
• Integrate seamlessly into client organizations, acting as a senior member of their finance team
• Partner with client leadership to identify accounting issues, improve processes, and implement solutions
• Serve as a reliable point of contact for accounting questions, audit coordination, and cross-functional finance support
• Adapt quickly to varying industries, systems, and team structures
• Develop, implement, and document accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Identify inefficiencies and drive process improvements that increase accuracy and speed across the close cycle
• Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements
• Support audit preparation and coordinate with external auditors as needed
• Embrace a mentorship mindset by sharing knowledge, offering guidance, and investing in the growth of junior team members and client staff
• Mentor and review the work of junior accountants or client staff as applicable
• Communicate complex accounting matters clearly to both financial and non-financial stakeholders
• Collaborate with Promentrs leadership to ensure consistent delivery quality and client satisfaction

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA license strongly preferred, or active CPA candidate)
• Big 4 public accounting experience is highly preferred
• 8-12 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity
• Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP and the ability to apply technical standards across various industries and entity types
• Proven experience owning the full-cycle close process, not just participating in it
• Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and beyond); experience with common accounting platforms (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage, Intacct, or similar) preferred
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; you can distill complexity into clear, actionable information
• Highly organized, self-directed, and comfortable managing priorities across multiple engagements or deliverables
• Prior experience in public accounting, consulting, or a multi-client environment is a strong plus
• Entrepreneurial mindset; you take ownership, operate with integrity, and thrive without being micromanaged
• Demonstrated proficiency with AI tools is required, including active use of Claude Cowork; candidates should be comfortable leveraging AI to streamline workflows, automate routine tasks, analyze financial data, and enhance productivity across accounting and finance functions

Engagement Terms

This position is structured as an independent contractor (1099) arrangement. Compensation is project- or hourly-based and will be discussed during the interview process based on experience, availability, and engagement scope. Conversion to a full-time employee role is available and actively encouraged for high-performing professionals.
