About the Organization

Pure Earth partners with governments in low- and middle-income countries to prevent exposure to toxic pollutants, advancing public health and economic growth. The organization works to identify, reduce, and prevent lead exposure at scale through a proven model that includes measuring the true burden of lead poisoning, identifying harmful sources, and implementing targeted actions such as cleaning up toxic hotspots, enforcing regulations, and removing lead from consumer products.

Pure Earth operates out of 9 regional offices worldwide, with a global team of over 100 professionals who have completed projects in 50+ low- and middle-income countries.

Why Lead Matters

Lead exposure is one of the most dangerous environmental health threats to children worldwide, responsible for an estimated 3.5 million deaths each year. Over one billion children are believed to have elevated blood lead levels, which damage brain development, limit learning, reduce earnings, and increase the risk of lifelong illness and death. The annual economic cost of lead exposure is estimated at $6 trillion.

Responsibilities

• Generate data that drives action by implementing large-scale blood lead level surveys and analyzing consumer products for lead contamination.
• Identify and assess toxic sites and sources of lead exposure in homes and communities.
• Protect public health by remediating contaminated sites and strengthening industrial pollution control.
• Enhance regulations and enforcement capacities in low- and middle-income countries.
• Build durable systems embedded in governments to ensure lasting impact, including health surveillance and regulatory frameworks.
• Mobilize global action by increasing public awareness, sharing solutions, and cultivating a community of champions and practitioners.

Impact and Achievements

• Collaborated with eight countries to implement large-scale blood lead level surveys since 2020.
• Identified nearly 5,000 toxic sites across 50+ countries.
• Analyzed 6,000+ consumer product samples for lead contamination in 25 countries.
• Assessed lead exposure sources in 1,080+ homes of lead-poisoned children across 7 countries.
• Conducted nearly 340 projects across 51 countries to reduce exposure to toxic pollution.
