About the Role

The Accounting Manager leads the accounting function across the organization, ensuring accurate financial records, compliance with healthcare regulations, and timely delivery of financial reports. This role manages and develops the accounting team, overseeing month-end and year-end close, reimbursement processes, and regulatory reporting. The Accounting Manager assists in the critical analysis of financial performance against budgets and works with regional and operational teams to understand business trends, identify key drivers of performance, and implement measurable strategies that improve efficiency, strengthen internal controls, and deliver strong financial outcomes that support the organization’s stability and growth.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and direct all accounting functions for the agency, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with healthcare regulations and company standards.
  • Manage and execute the month-end and year-end close processes, delivering accurate and timely financial statements to support operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements, budgets, forecasts, variance reports, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities to enhance financial performance.
  • Monitor and manage agency cash flow, reconcile bank accounts, and oversee daily cash management activities to ensure adequate liquidity for operations.
  • Assist in the development of budgets and forecasts in collaboration with department heads, aligning financial planning with organizational goals and service delivery requirements.
  • Collaborate with billing and revenue cycle teams to resolve claim denials, optimize reimbursement, and ensure timely collections from all payers.
  • Guide the preparation, review, and timely issuance of internal and external reports, including balance sheets, income statements, statements of cash flows, cash flow projections, payroll/PTO accruals, and other supporting reports produced on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive internal control framework, including policies, procedures, and testing processes to safeguard agency assets, ensure data integrity, and mitigate risks specific to home health and hospice financial operations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and payer-specific regulations by preparing and submitting accurate Medicare/Medicaid cost reports and reimbursement documentation.
  • Lead all internal and external audit activities and serve as the primary contact for auditors, surveyors, and regulatory agencies, ensuring all required financial and compliance documentation is complete, accurate, and submitted within required timelines.
  • Advise and partner with agency leadership, department heads, and operational managers by providing clear financial insights, trend analysis, and data-driven recommendations to support strategic planning, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
  • Direct, mentor, and develop accounting team members through ongoing coaching, performance goal setting, skills training, and regular evaluations, fostering a high-performing and collaborative department culture.
  • Collaborate across all departments working closely with operations and clinical leadership to align financial performance with patient care goals.
  • Maintain current knowledge of healthcare reimbursement regulations, adjusting processes as needed and communicating updates to leadership and affected departments.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and company financial data at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field is required.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of accounting experience; experience in healthcare preferred but not required.
  • CPA preferred, but not required.
  • Experience working with general ledgers (creating journal entries, establishing accruals, preparation of financial statements) is required.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret and present financial data are required; must have strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with NetSmart and Sage is strongly preferred.

Working Conditions

  • This position requires daily presence at the corporate office, involving desk work for most of the workday.
  • Occasional physical activities may include standing, moving, communicating, identifying written information, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting up to twenty (20) pounds independently.
  • May need to move through areas of the corporate office or other worksites of the organization.
  • Occasional travel (up to 10%) may be required for recruitment events, training events, or site visits.
  • Involves juggling multiple projects simultaneously, requiring strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Active participation in staff activities aimed at fostering teamwork, unity, and morale is expected.
  • Required to stay current on all training and ongoing education initiatives, pursuing self-improvement and continuous learning.
