Accounting Intern
Accounting Intern position with the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Project Management Bureau.
About the role
You will be exposed to several project-management cost-accounting systems, work with project ledgers, cost centers, object codes, and interconnected accounting systems that capture project activity. Responsibilities include performing reconciliations, compliance auditing, identifying allowable and eligible costs, and calculating State, Local, and Federal shares of costs for multi-party funded projects. You will also gain exposure to electronic organization and retrieval of accounting records and internal controls within the electronic storage application.
Additional duties involve consultant coordination support: aiding the consultant coordination section in administering contracts, reviewing contracts for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with federal audit regulations, processing invoices daily, compiling consultant cost data, forecasting future budgets, and organizing and indexing contract records for permanent storage.
Responsibilities
- Perform reconciliations and compliance auditing
- Identify allowable and eligible costs
- Calculate State, Local, and Federal share of costs for multi-party funded projects
- Navigate and maintain electronic organization and retrieval of accounting records
- Support consultant coordination section in administering contracts
- Review contracts for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with federal audit regulations
- Process invoices daily
- Compile consultant cost data and forecast future budgets
- Organize and index contract records for permanent storage
Requirements
- Operate a personal computer
- Moderate familiarity with Excel
- Navigate through various computer systems
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Work well with co-workers

- Completed Financial Accounting (284)
- Currently enrolled in, or have completed, Managerial Accounting (285)
Schedule
- Part-time during fall semester (up to 20 hours/week)
- Full-time summer (May–August, 40 hours/week)
