Accountant (Senior)

Description

Incumbents perform financial, compliance, performance and information systems audits to ensure compliance with established requirements and program goals.

Examples Of Duties

• Duties include, but are not limited to:
• * Conducting audits of department or agency activities;
• * Analyzing procedures, and management and internal controls;
• * Verifying conformance with pertinent program goals, and reviewing for economy and efficiency of operations;
• * Verifying compliance with laws and regulations, and with County policies and procedures;
• * Evaluating the fairness of financial statement presentations;
• * Preparing audit reports, work papers and schedules;
• * Performing various special assignments and related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

• Any combination of education and experience that has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• The required knowledge, skills, and abilities can typically be obtained by a Bachelor’s degree with at least 18 semester units of college-level accounting/business related coursework, PLUS:
• Internal Auditor I – No professional accounting or auditing experience required.
• Internal Auditor II – Eighteen months of professional auditing experience.
• Internal Auditor III - Three years of increasingly responsible professional auditing experience, including eighteen months at a level equivalent to an Internal Auditor II for the County of Ventura.
• Education/Experience Substitution: Professional level auditing experience may be substituted for up to two years of undergraduate education on a year for year basis, provided the candidate possesses at least 18 semester units of college-level accounting/business related coursework. Professional level accounting experience may be substituted for professional auditing experience on a two for one basis. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certificate, or a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certificate may substitute for one year of professional auditing experience for a maximum substitution limit of one year experience.
• Other Requirements: Verification of accounting/business-related coursework completed is required. Advanced training, as evidenced by a Master's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Information Technology is highly desirable.

• Application Evaluation - 100%: An Application Evaluation will be conducted. A score will be assigned to each application based on established criteria. Such score will be considered as a final score for placement on the eligible list.
• TRANSCRIPTS: Verification of coursework is required. Transcripts or grade reports from an accredited college or university which reflect passing grades in the required subject areas must be on file with the County's Human Resource Office to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
• Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one year.
• Background Investigation: Applicants may be subjected to a thorough background investigation which may include inquiry into past employment, education, credit, criminal background information and driving record.
