About the role
The City of Roanoke is seeking an Accountant to maintain financial records, primarily in the area of financial reporting, contracts and accounts receivables.
Responsibilities
- Compile and analyze financial information used in the preparation of complex financial reports
- Prepare journal entries, financial reports, statements and verify financial data
- Perform reconciliations and prepare written analyses of account fluctuations and budget variances
- Assemble statistical and accounting data on request
- Assist independent auditors as required
- Assist other departments by providing information on financial matters
- Prepare budgetary or financial reports as needed
- Provide oversight and assistance as required in operation of business areas of municipal government
- Apply systematic collection action to collect delinquent accounts
- Perform assigned accounting functions in accordance with GAAP and applicable Federal and State legislation for assigned area of responsibility and accounts
- Maintain specialized databases; research and make recommendations to upgrade or modify departmental information management systems and procedures
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in accounting or a related field
- Three to five years related experience and/or training in accounting, preferably in the public sector
- Equivalent combination of education and experience

- Dental Insurance: Four coverage types available. Monthly rates range from $2.80 to $49.36
- Life Insurance: Paid by City; coverage equal to annual salary rounded up and doubled (double again for accidental death)
- Optional Life Insurance: Available through payroll deduction
- Long Term Disability Insurance: Available through payroll deduction; annual cost is annual salary × 0.00255 (City pays half)
- Retirement: Employees contribute 5% of salary; choose between Defined Benefit Pension Plan or Hybrid Program. Vesting after five years of service. Normal retirement at age 55 with age + service = 85, or age 65 with 5 years of service
