About the role
The University of South Alabama’s Office of Grants and Contracts Accounting seeks to hire an Accountant III. This position supervises and/or performs general accounting functions for Grants and Contracts, prepares financial reports, monitors cash flow, and ensures compliance with regulations.
Responsibilities
- Supervises and/or performs general accounting functions for Grants and Contracts.
- Prepares monthly and quarterly expenditure reports and monthly, quarterly, or annual billing for granting agencies.
- Maintains and reconciles miscellaneous accounts in the restricted fund to monitor accounts receivable balances and ensure the accuracy of revenue.
- Maintains and documents cost sharing requirements for grant accounts.
- Reviews awards and collaborates with Sponsored Programs Administration to revise ambiguous terms.
- Supervises and/or reviews service center rate calculations, billing, and account reconciliations, coordinating with relevant departments as needed.
- Maintains and participates in discussions and meetings related to service center policies.
- Maintains and monitors increased internal controls following the implementation of Uniform Guidance.
- Investigates non-compliance issues and conducts root cause analysis.
- Communicates with various stakeholders including deans, chairs, principal investigators, and business managers regarding funding agency regulations.
- Advises the Research Administration on cost principles and assists in establishing necessary procedures due to regulatory changes.
- Assists in preparing summary of Current Restricted Funds Expenditures by Division.
- Prepares financial schedules required by external auditors for the A-133 report.
- Aids in documentation and reports related to annual audits.
- Maintains consultant/subcontract digital files.
- Utilizes a calculator and personal computer to prepare financial statements as required by the funding agency.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, with three years of professional accounting experience.
- A master’s degree in accounting may substitute for one year of the required experience.
- Experience working with grants, service centers, and/or clinical trials is preferred.

- Excellent analytical skills and strong communication abilities, both oral and written.
- Proficiency in using a calculator and personal computer to prepare financial statements.
- Ability to work regular and prompt attendance, and additional hours as required.
