Job Responsibilities
Work is performed under the supervision of a professional accountant for a review of work and reports for conformance to established procedures.
- Reviews and processes financial transactions, which may include invoices, billings, cash receipts, cash disbursements, budget amendments, payroll transactions, federal grants, etc.
- Entry level professional accounting duties requiring the application of accounting principles and practices in a wide range of activities.
- Prepares standard financial reports for use by Board of Education, division and finance staff.
- Review and check such financial records as contract billing, invoicing and travel conferences for accuracy and conformance to standards.
- Prepare a variety of accounting and budget reports for review by their supervisor.
- Assist in reconciling and balancing financial and budget reports.
- Complies data for statistical and financial reporting purposes.
- Reviews and checks financial documents for accuracy.
- Reconciles financial information, identifies and resolves issues.
- Assists in developing and/or revising documentation for critical internal financial functions, ensuring documentation is indexed for ease of use and updated annually.
- Reviews current transaction processes and recommends changes that enhance internal controls and/or efficiency.
- Trains other team members on critical functions; thereby ensuring departmental effectiveness.
- Assists team members by sharing information and assisting during times of high volume, absences, and in meeting deadlines.
- Serves as primary back-up for Deputy Treasurer functions during times of extended leaves and/or position vacancies.
- Responses to queries from customers, divisions and finance staff regarding areas of responsibility.
- Maintains files for accounting and compliance purposes.
- May create reports within WinCap and/or Excel which assist divisions in analyzing financial information and/or transactions.
- May train division personnel in departmental policies and procedures.
- Other duties may be assigned that are relevant to the civil service job description for this title.
Job Qualifications
Minimum Civil Service Qualifications: There is no civil service examination required for this position for the duration of the NY HELPS Program. Candidates must meet the minimum civil service qualifications for a NY HELPS appointment as follows:
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance; OR
- An Associates Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance and two (2) years of satisfactory accounting or auditing experience; OR
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
Additional Qualifications: Experience in finance, accounting, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
