About the Role

The A/R Collections Lead has primary responsibility for all facets of AR collections and management, including account flow from billing through to liquidation, disputes, Accounts Receivable analysis, and AR trending. Responsibilities include follow-up tactics, techniques, and education; vendor relations, audits, and management; and working with departments to improve charge flow and consistency. This role provides direct oversight of all collectors and training for new collector/biller staff.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all collections-related functions, including billing, rejections, follow-up, disputes, and ongoing analysis to ensure best-in-class performance and outcomes.
  • Continually data mine to identify payer issues and trends, escalating as necessary to support long-term revenue cycle initiatives.
  • Engage with payers on inventory and aging, including monthly or as-needed payer relation discussion meetings for AR resolution.
  • Stay current with contracts and knowledgeable of all state and federal regulations that impact AR.
  • Develop and implement ongoing training programs to address departmental needs and monitor established productivity and quality outcomes of staff.
  • Continually develop and oversee the management of workflow activities and the formulation of policies and procedures for departmental needs while establishing goals.
  • Manage assigned staff, including recommending organizational structure, reporting relationships, and staffing needs based on goals. Make hiring, promotional, and salary decisions in accordance with university policy. Provide performance appraisals and determine disciplinary action as needed.
  • Interface with departments on patient concerns and/or charging matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; equivalent years of service in AR management may substitute for an advanced degree.
  • 5 years of management experience in hospital A/R billing and follow-up.
  • Strong knowledge of hospital registration, insurance billing, and overall AR management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise, organize, multitask, and achieve results through others.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Contract knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.

Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) – if no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date (required within LA City only).

Pay

The annual base salary range for this position is $71,386.00 - $116,865.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

Schedule

Full-time, 8-hour days (exempt, non-union).
