About the Role
Riverstone Logistics (RLX) is a technology-enabled 3PL that moves big and bulky freight across a large North American network, with a Middle Mile operation feeding our Final Mile delivery network. The Carrier Operations Manager owns and manages RLX's active Middle Mile carrier base, building and managing a portfolio of carriers to support strategic objectives. This role focuses on two key service aspects: LTL carriers and contract full truckload (FTL) carriers providing multi-stop deliveries. The goal is to make RLX the 3PL of choice among Middle Mile carriers by managing performance, relationships, rates, and day-to-day operational issues.
Responsibilities
- LTL Carrier Management
- Own relationships with RLX's regional and national LTL carriers, serving as the primary point of contact for each account.
- Manage LTL carrier pricing programs, including negotiated rate agreements, tariff base rates, freight class (NMFC), fuel surcharges, and accessorial terms.
- Monitor LTL service performance through carrier scorecards and business reviews, tracking on-time pickup/delivery, missed pickups, billing accuracy, and claims/exceptions.
- Own LTL freight claims and accounts receivable disputes, driving fair and timely resolution.
- Manage high-volume day-to-day LTL execution, resolving service exceptions and coverage gaps quickly.
- Multi-Stop Full Truckload (FTL) Carrier Management
- Own relationships with RLX's contract carriers moving non-traditional FTL freight via multi-stop delivery.
- Negotiate and govern contracted lane rates and committed capacity across new lanes, new business, and active lanes (including RFPs, mini-bids, and routing guide placement).
- Manage FTL carrier performance against committed service levels, including tender acceptance, on-time performance, and equipment availability.
- Support dedicated and contracted freight programs, coordinating committed capacity (e.g., drop trailer and power-only) to keep lanes covered.
- Resolve FTL billing questions, claims, and disputes tied to carrier moves.
- Daily Operations and Coordination
- Monitor active lanes, anticipate coverage risks, and ensure freight movement.
- Coordinate with Account Managers to align carrier decisions with customer commitments.
- Escalate issues to leadership and Compliance as needed.
- Process and Scale
- Document recurring issues into SOPs, carrier scorecards, and scalable processes.
- Provide insights to Capacity Solutions on network capacity needs (LTL/FTL).
What This Role Is Not
- Not customer-facing or client-facing (customer relationships are owned by Account Managers).
- Not a sourcing or recruiting role (new carrier sourcing/vetting is owned by Capacity Solutions; this role takes over once a carrier is active).
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of LTL and FTL Middle Mile freight and large national carrier relationships.
- Experience managing carrier relationships and performance in a 3PL, brokerage, or asset-based environment.
- Experience with dedicated and contracted freight programs.
- Strong rate/contract negotiation skills and ability to resolve operational issues under pressure.
- Familiarity with transportation management systems and market rate tools.
- Strong communication, relationship management, and organizational skills for a large carrier base.
Preferred Experience
- Managing national LTL carrier pricing programs.
- LTL pricing structures (tariffs, freight class/NMFC, accessorials).
- FTL lane and RFP pricing.
- Awareness of DOT and FMCSA requirements affecting carrier relationships.
Success Metrics
- LTL and FTL carriers meet committed service levels and continue contracting with RLX as their preferred 3PL.
- Improved carrier performance metrics (on-time delivery, tender acceptance, claims resolution).
- LTL pricing and FTL lane rates maintain margin without losing capacity.
- Day-to-day billing, claims, and service exceptions meet established thresholds.
