About the Role

Maintains control accounts for appropriated and non-appropriated funds involving a relatively extensive number of accounts and range of kinds of disbursements. May maintain program control accounts characterized by unusual accounting features.

Responsibilities

  • Post to accounting records and systematize fiscal information, including computing, classifying, and recording numerical data to maintain complete financial accounting records.
  • Derive reports from financial accounting records.
  • Reconcile accounts by checking for errors, balancing, and verifying original source documents.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

General Experience

  • One-half (1/2) year of work experience demonstrating knowledge of arithmetic and spelling.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions, write simply and directly, and observe differences in words and numbers quickly and accurately.

Specialized Experience

  • Three (3) years of work experience involving posting to accounting records and systematizing fiscal information.
  • Experience must demonstrate knowledge of standard accounting classification and terminology pertinent to accounts maintenance operations.
  • Familiarity with office practices and procedures relating to the processing and recording of transactions and accounting information.
  • Experience reconciling accounts (e.g., checking for errors, balancing, and verifying original source documents).

Non-Qualifying Experience

Experience as a teller, cashier, inventory clerk, stock clerk, supply clerk, or related work that primarily involves checking accuracy of computations or monetary transactions but does not require fiscal record-keeping knowledge is not considered qualifying.

Qualifications

Substitution of Education for Experience

  • High school graduation or equivalent with courses in basic English and arithmetic may substitute for six (6) months of General Experience.
  • An associate's degree or equivalent in accounting may substitute for one (1) year of specialized experience, up to a maximum of two (2) years, provided the training included at least three (3) credits per semester of accounting courses.
  • Completion of one (1) school year of an accounting, business, or related curriculum may substitute for one (1) year of specialized experience, provided the training included at least three (3) credits per semester of accounting courses.
  • A baccalaureate degree in accounting meets all experience requirements.
  • Fifteen (15) semester hours of relevant training may substitute for six (6) months of experience, up to a maximum of three and one-half (3 1/2) years, provided the training included at least three (3) credits per semester of accounting courses (e.g., accounting theory, methods for recording and reporting financial information, asset/liability/ownership valuation).
