About the Role

This position maintains control accounts for appropriated and/or non-appropriated funds involving a relatively limited number of accounts and range of kinds of disbursements. Responsibilities may include maintaining one or more major accounting groupings for a major department, supervising and participating in the maintenance of subsidiary ledgers, and performing other related duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain control accounts for appropriated and/or non-appropriated funds.
  • Maintain major accounting groupings for a department.
  • Supervise and participate in the maintenance of subsidiary ledgers.
  • Reconcile accounts (e.g., checking for errors, balancing, verifying original source documents).
  • Compute, classify, and record numerical data to keep financial accounting records complete.
  • Derive reports from financial accounting records.

Requirements

General Experience

  • One-half (1/2) year of work experience demonstrating knowledge of arithmetic and spelling.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions, write simply and directly, and observe differences in words and numbers quickly and accurately.

Specialized Experience

  • Two (2) years of work experience involving posting to accounting records and systematizing fiscal information.
  • Experience must include computing, classifying, and recording numerical data to maintain financial accounting records and derive reports.
  • Knowledge of standard accounting classification, terminology, and office practices related to processing and recording transactions.
  • Experience reconciling accounts (e.g., error-checking, balancing, verifying source documents).

Non-Qualifying Experience

Experience as a teller, cashier, inventory clerk, stock clerk, supply clerk, or similar roles that involve posting non-fiscal data or checking computational accuracy without fiscal record-keeping knowledge is not considered qualifying.

Supervisory Aptitude

Some Account Clerk III positions require supervisory aptitude, demonstrated through:

  • Successful completion of assignments with supervisory responsibilities or aspects.
  • Serving as a group or team leader in roles where supervisory capabilities can be demonstrated.
  • Completion of training courses in supervision with application of supervisory skills in work assignments.
  • Favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating supervisory potential.

Qualifications

Substitution of Education for Experience

  • High school graduation or equivalent with courses in basic English and arithmetic may substitute for six (6) months of General Experience.
  • An associate's degree or equivalent in accounting from an accredited institution may substitute for one (1) year of specialized experience, up to a maximum of two (2) years.
  • One (1) school year of an accounting, business, or related curriculum (with at least three (3) credits per semester of accounting courses) may substitute for one (1) year of specialized experience.
  • A baccalaureate degree in accounting from an accredited university meets all experience requirements.
  • Fifteen (15) semester hours of relevant training (with at least three (3) credits per semester of accounting courses) may substitute for six (6) months of experience, up to a maximum of three and one-half (3.5) years.

Relevant accounting courses include accounting theory, methods for recording and reporting financial information, and analysis of asset valuation, liabilities, and ownership.
