About the role

City Year, an AmeriCorps program, supports students in achieving academic success, improving attendance, and developing positive behaviors at school.

Role and responsibilities

  • Coaching and mentoring elementary, middle and/or high school students
  • Helping students earn academic success, improve attendance, and develop positive behaviors
  • Planning and monitoring individual student progress
  • Working with teachers on whole class instruction, breakout spaces, and other in-class student assistance
  • Supporting academic coaching and interpersonal development for students
  • Creating and implementing a behavior management system for students
  • Developing and implementing literacy and/or math skills based on student levels
  • Encouraging assignment completion and answering student questions
  • Collaborating with teachers and team members to collect, record, analyze, and monitor individual student progress
  • Participating in facilitated reviews of student data collected and entered into City Year's student data system
  • Creating an engaging, safe, and healthy classroom space in collaboration with the teacher
  • Serving as a liaison between students, families, and school staff
  • Supporting and conducting extended day and virtual programming for students
  • Creating, supporting, and/or leading events or programs that recognize and appreciate student growth and/or achievement

Requirements

  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
  • Be 17-25 by July 1, 2025
  • Have a GED or high school diploma, some college experience, or college degree
  • Have served no more than three terms in an AmeriCorps state or national program
  • Agree to and complete a background check
  • Be able to begin City Year by July/August 2025 (specific start date varies by location)
