Academic Interventionist

About the Role

The Academic Interventionist supports the instructional program in assigned classrooms by working with individual students or small groups and assisting teachers and staff with data collection and record-keeping tasks.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Associate’s degree with at least two (2) years’ study (60 credit hours) or Highly Qualified designation by passing the GACE paraprofessional assessment preferred
• Eligible for Georgia Paraprofessional license as required from the Professional Standards Commission
• At least 21 years of age (individuals who have a minimum credit hours and hold an Associate’s Degree or higher teaching credential do not have to meet the age requirement)
• Maintains all licenses and certifications
• Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance
• Previous experience working with children

Skills & Competencies

• Perform multiple, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions
• Operate standard office equipment, including pertinent software applications
• Prepare and maintain accurate records
• Perform basic math and follow complex, multi-step written and oral instructions
• Understand concepts of grammar and punctuation
• Knowledge of child development stages, learning styles, and age-appropriate activities
• Familiarity with classroom instructional media and technology, including keyboarding
• Schedule activities and collate data

• Communicate effectively with diverse groups while maintaining confidentiality
• Set priorities, work as part of a team, and handle constant interruptions
• Problem-solving to identify issues and create action plans

Responsibilities

• Adapt classroom activities and materials to support student work, reinforcing classroom objectives under the direction of the supervising teacher
• Assist students individually or in small groups with lesson assignments, writing assistance, and computer learning programs to reinforce learning concepts and help achieve academic goals
• Attend staff and in-service meetings to acquire and convey job-related information
• Communicate with teachers regarding student behavioral, academic, and attendance issues to assist in evaluating progress and implementing interventions
• Implement instructional activities (reading assignments, computer work, etc.) under teacher supervision to reinforce learning concepts
• Maintain the classroom environment (equipment, work area, files, etc.) to ensure instructional tools are available, a safe learning environment is provided, and mandated requirements are met
• Monitor students in various settings (classroom, computer lab, etc.) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment
• Provide intervention strategies (scripted instruction, digital programs, etc.) to help students overcome learning challenges and achieve academic success
• Report student incidents and suspected child-related issues (accidents, altercations, abuse, etc.) to ensure safety and compliance with regulatory requirements
• Respond to emergency situations (injuries, altercations, etc.) to address safety concerns and direct issues to the appropriate personnel for resolution
• Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 30% walking, and 50% standing. The role may involve:
