Academic & Career Advisor (TEMPORARY, UP TO 3 YEARS)
About the Role
As an Academic & Career Advisor (temporary position lasting up to 3 years) in the University Advisement Center within the Student Development Services Division at Brigham Young University, you will provide specialized strengths-based life design support and exploratory academic and career advisement to all undergraduate students. This role involves one-on-one and small group advising, managing special projects, campus-wide outreach, documenting student needs, professional development, and referring students to support resources across campus. While the Advisement Center does not operate within an academic college, Advisors support Open Major students with course scheduling and academic standing needs.
Responsibilities
- Exploratory Student Advisement
- Guide students through academic decision-making by explaining options, assessing outcomes, and supporting realistic academic and career goal setting.
- Advise diverse student populations, including those changing majors, adding skills, undecided, transfer, former, graduate, at-risk, or in crisis, by assessing academic and personal development and identifying next steps for growth.
- Program Coordination
- Provide oversight and support to student employees and mentees while managing key operational responsibilities, including IT, web functions, assessment, and reporting.
- Plan and coordinate major student-facing initiatives and outreach efforts, such as the major fair, New Student Orientation, and targeted communications.
- Proactive Outreach
- Conduct outreach to student groups identified by center leadership and build relationships to support student engagement.
- Gather student perspectives and experiences to shape future efforts to improve student services.
- Professional Development
- Build and maintain knowledge of student support and advising resources while staying current on developments in academic and career advising through meetings, trainings, and professional events.
- Develop expertise in key skill areas and share knowledge through professional development and training for colleagues.
- Leadership & Citizenship
- Contribute to leadership and service within the BYU advising community and in state, regional, and national advising organizations, including committee work.
- Share expertise through professional conference presentations and guest lectures in student development and related courses.
Requirements
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
- One of the following:
- Master’s degree in advisement or counseling, and 2 years of advisement experience, or
- Master’s degree in a relevant area with graduate coursework in counseling/advising and career theory, and 2 years of advisement experience, or
- Advisement certification (or equivalent graduate coursework), and 2 years of college advisement experience.
- Excellent helping skills and ability to assist students with life planning and decision-making.
- Ability to positively relate to students from diverse backgrounds and communicate effectively with faculty and staff.
- Strong writing, organizational, and presentation skills, with a demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- One of the following:
- Master’s degree in advisement or counseling, and 4 years of advisement experience, or
- Master’s degree in a relevant area with graduate coursework in counseling/advising and career theory, and 4 years of advisement experience, or
- Advisement certification (or equivalent graduate coursework), and 4 years of college advisement experience.
- Knowledge of advisement, career, and student development theories and practices.
- Experience in teaching, program development, program management, and leadership.
- Expertise in academic advisement, including knowledge of BYU’s majors, programs, general education requirements, admissions, transfer policies, financial aid, scholarships, and graduation policies.
- Skills in career advisement, including the ability to conduct career and personality assessments.

Pay
Pay Grade: 52. Typical starting pay ranges from $65,500 to $84,500. The actual compensation offered will consider internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
