Academic Advisor I - Department of Biology

About the role

The Department of Biology at Texas A&M University is hiring an Academic Advisor I to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. This position plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention.

Responsibilities

• Advise students to understand and develop realistic and attainable educational and academic goals.
• Provide input on related majors, minors, future education, and career options that best align with goals.
• Aid students with academic processes such as registration, add/drop, Q drops, withdrawals, and change of curriculum submissions.
• Counsel students regarding core and degree course selection and implications of selected courses and/or exception requests.
• Engage the student population using outreach methods to keep students informed of critical and relevant personal, academic, and professional topics.
• Proactively share available academic, professional, and health and wellness resources such as the Academic Success Center, Career Center, Student Organizations, Counseling & Psychological Services, or Disability Resources.
• Monitor students' progress by reviewing and assessing academic records.
• Aid in the planning and/or delivery of department-related advising, student success, retention events, and academic campaigns.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Knowledge of student development in higher education.
• Experience in advising, counseling, or mentoring.
• Familiarity with academic policies, degree requirements, and FERPA.
• Basic understanding of academic policies, degree requirements, and FERPA.
• Experience in peer mentorship, peer advising, or student leadership roles.
• Experience in using various computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

• Ability to work with confidential information.
