About the role

The Academic Advisor is a full-time, on-site role based in East St. Louis, IL. This position is responsible for providing academic guidance and support to students, helping them develop individualized education plans, select appropriate courses or programs, and understand graduation and career pathways. Day-to-day tasks include meeting with students and families, monitoring academic progress, coordinating with educators and program staff, and maintaining accurate records and documentation. The Academic Advisor will also organize workshops or information sessions on topics such as study skills, college readiness, and career exploration, while connecting students with community resources and support services. Collaboration with internal teams and external partners is expected to ensure that advising services align with the organization’s broader community and economic development goals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized academic advising, including education planning, goal setting, and progress monitoring.
  • Engage with students, families, educators, and community partners through strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Manage caseloads, documentation, and scheduling in a structured environment.
  • Facilitate workshops or group sessions on academic success, college access, or career readiness.
  • Maintain student records and produce reports using basic office software and data tracking tools.
  • Connect students with community resources and support services.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to align advising services with broader community and economic development goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, or a related field preferred; relevant experience in advising or student support strongly valued.
  • Understanding of community-based work and the needs of vulnerable or under-resourced populations in urban settings.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and non-discriminatory practices in all aspects of student engagement and program delivery.
