This position is part of the University of Idaho’s Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Division, specifically within University Advising Services (UAS). UAS aims to elevate academic advising through teaching, connection, accessibility, and mutual respect, fostering student engagement and success.

About the role

The Academic Advisor supports and educates students to enhance their learning experience at the University of Idaho. This role focuses on building professional relationships with students, implementing proactive strategies to help them achieve their educational goals, and ensuring timely progress toward degree completion. The advisor will have content expertise in one or more college(s)/program(s) and assist students in selecting courses and opportunities aligned with their goals. Additional responsibilities include clarifying university academic policies, creating rapport, and referring students to campus resources. Collaboration with university partners is expected to ensure students have access to support and enrichment opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide student-centered customer service and present information clearly to individuals, small groups, and large groups.
  • Compile and analyze information to support leadership and administrative decisions.
  • Interpret and apply academic standards and regulations.
  • Assist students in course selection and engagement opportunities consistent with their developing goals.
  • Support students’ timely progress toward degree completion.
  • Clarify university academic policies and procedures.
  • Build rapport and establish academic advising relationships with students.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources.
  • Collaborate with university partners to ensure access to campus support and enrichment opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (required at time of hire).
  • Eligibility for membership in related professional organizations.
  • Ability to travel and work non-standard business hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree or professional experience in a related discipline.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience providing academic advising in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working successfully with students and colleagues.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining quality professional relationships.
  • Experience analyzing information to identify problems and develop recommendations.
  • Knowledge of University of Idaho academic rules and regulations for undergraduate advising.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and advising best practices.

Skills

  • Effective communication (written and oral) to adapt complex ideas to student needs and articulate program requirements to diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative on new and existing projects.
  • Ability to motivate, encourage, and support students to recognize their potential and meet challenges.

Pay

$49,816 or higher, depending on education and experience.

Schedule

Full-time, fiscal year appointment (1.0 FTE). Exempt status.
