About the role
The Academic Advising Coordinator at UNT Dallas is responsible for advising students on degree/program requirements and course scheduling. They also evaluate transcripts, compare degree plans against requirements, and provide holistic student support.
Responsibilities
- Evaluates transcripts, AP scores, CLEP, or other nontraditional transfer credit hours for applicability to UNT Dallas degree programs according to established criteria.
- Compares contents of each degree plan against the established requirements for a particular degree and notifies students of discrepancies.
- Evaluates and advises students on degree/program requirements and course scheduling.
- Provides holistic student support through collaboration with academic units and the division of Student Access and Success.
- Works with advising team utilizing case management methods.
- Contacts students who have received academic alerts to recommend solutions and provide support.
- Confers with faculty or administrators with regard to academic policy issues, such as acceptable course substitutes for a particular degree.
- Affords assistance to all new and transfer students during orientation advising sessions for a seamless transition to UNT Dallas.
- Assists in determining TSI testing and appropriate course placement for incoming new and transfer students.
- Provides robust advising to students completing TSI requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in related field and three years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.
- A master's degree can substitute for one year of experience.
Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
- Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
- Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with wide populations verbally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to work independently.
