A Repairman-Machinist (Metro)

About the role

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is one of the largest transit systems in the United States and is seeking dynamic and energetic individuals to join the team. This position is located in Baltimore City and involves performing rail car maintenance, including the use of engine lathes, milling machines, boring machines, presses, precision tool grinding, radial drills, and other shop equipment.

Responsibilities

• Read blueprints and use precision instruments and various hand tools.
• Break down and reassemble various components as secondary duties.
• Perform bench work from blueprints and templates to manufacture parts.
• Perform inspections and repairs to brakes, truck, and coupler systems, including removal and installation of components.
• Operate service equipment such as trucks, forklifts, shop carts, 20-ton cranes, and hoists.
• Perform various other duties associated with the Metro Rail Car Maintenance Group.

Requirements

• Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency (GED) certificate.
• Five (5) years of experience working as a Machinist.
• Ability to substitute formal technical training or on-the-job training in an approved apprenticeship program for experience on a year-for-year basis, for a maximum of two (2) years.
• Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, or overseeing unit operations on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.
• Good driving record and a valid driver's license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of Maryland.

Special Requirements

• Eligible applicants may be subject to a background investigation under Federal and State laws and regulations. A conviction is not an automatic disqualification to employment.
• Subject to pre-employment drug testing and substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations 49-Federal Department of Transportation Drug Alcohol Testing Protocols and Federal Transit Administration Alcohol Testing Rules, and Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11.
• Employees must adhere to all safety rules, policies, and regulations, and report hazards, unsafe acts, near misses, injuries, and accidents immediately.
