About the role

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is one of the largest transit systems in the United States and is seeking dynamic and energetic individuals to join the team. This position is located in Baltimore City and involves performing rail car maintenance, including the use of engine lathes, milling machines, boring machines, presses, precision tool grinding, radial drills, and other shop equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints and use precision instruments and various hand tools.
  • Break down and reassemble various components as secondary duties.
  • Perform bench work from blueprints and templates to manufacture parts.
  • Perform inspections and repairs to brakes, truck, and coupler systems, including removal and installation of components.
  • Operate service equipment such as trucks, forklifts, shop carts, 20-ton cranes, and hoists.
  • Perform various other duties associated with the Metro Rail Car Maintenance Group.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency (GED) certificate.
  • Five (5) years of experience working as a Machinist.
  • Ability to substitute formal technical training or on-the-job training in an approved apprenticeship program for experience, on a year-for-year basis, for a maximum of two (2) years.
  • Good driving record and a valid driver's license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of Maryland.

Qualifications

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

Applicants with degrees granted outside of the United States will be required to provide a written evaluation of education documentation by a credentialing organization such as International Credential Evaluation (WES).
