9 month-Teaching Faculty-Respiratory Therapy

About the role

The primary responsibility of a faculty member at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for learners in didactic and clinical environments, with emphasis on excellent teaching in classrooms, laboratories, simulations, and clinical settings. Faculty help learners develop their interests and abilities to become better workers and citizens. This 9-month teaching position carries a normal teaching load of 15 credits per semester and requires availability to teach day, evening, and weekend classes.

Responsibilities

• Teach didactic and laboratory courses in Respiratory Therapy, including traditional, hybrid, and distance-learning formats
• Conduct clinical rotations with learners in local hospitals and healthcare facilities
• Serve as faculty advisor, participate on division/campus/college committees, and engage in curriculum development and assessment
• Meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports; teach prescribed courses with established texts
• Conduct student conferences, hold required office hours, and advise students
• Contribute to program development, adhere to professional ethics, and maintain current competence in the discipline
• Answer emails responsibly and participate in graduation, recruitment, promotional events, student life, and interprofessional activities
• Perform ongoing assessment of learners using formative and summative tools; update courses based on evaluations and best practices
• Provide reliable office hours for advising, tutoring, remediation, and consultation
• Mentor and orient new faculty; model behaviors that encourage student success and retention
• Balance teaching responsibilities with program administration and serve as liaison between the college and clinical affiliates

Requirements

• Associate degree in the teaching field with demonstrated competencies from a regionally accredited institution whose respiratory therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)
• Active, unexpired Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a condition for hire and continued employment
• Active, unexpired Commonwealth of Virginia respiratory therapist license with no restrictions; out-of-state licensees must obtain or renew Virginia licensure
• Two years of full-time occupational experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT); part-time experience will be converted to full-time equivalent
• Two years of experience teaching either as appointed faculty in a CoARC-accredited respiratory care program or as a clinical instructor/preceptor for such programs

Qualifications

• Ability to teach classroom, lab, and clinical components including pharmacology, hemodynamics, respiratory physiology, respiratory mechanics, and pulmonary functions
• Ability to use technology to enhance instruction and leverage online resources and the current LMS
• Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills
• Proficiency with MS Office, PowerPoint, and the Internet
• Creativity, innovation, strong problem-solving and organizational skills with ability to complete assignments accurately and on time with minimal supervision
• Knowledge of NBRC procedures and regulations
• Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds among faculty, staff, and learners

Desired Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution
• Neonatal Pediatric Specialist (NPS), Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT), or Adult Critical Care Specialty (ACCS) credential from the NBRC
• Four or more years of experience as a registered respiratory therapist
• Experience teaching culturally, linguistically, socioeconomically, and academically diverse learners at the college level
• Certification and/or experience teaching hybrid or online courses

Pay

Starting salary is commensurate with education, experience, and other qualifying factors within the assigned rank, falling within the following hiring ranges: Instructor ($63,000–$84,000) or Assistant Professor ($72,000–$88,000). Rank is determined by education and academic teaching experience.
