About the role

The primary responsibility of a faculty member at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for learners in didactic and clinical environments, with emphasis on excellent teaching in classrooms, laboratories, simulations, and clinical settings. Faculty help learners develop their interests and abilities to become better workers and citizens.

Responsibilities

  • Teach various didactic and laboratory courses in Respiratory Therapy, including traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats.
  • Conduct clinical rotations with learners in local hospitals and healthcare facilities.
  • Teach day, evening, and weekend classes as assigned.
  • Serve as faculty advisor, participate on division/campus/college committees, and engage in curriculum development and assessment.
  • Meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports; teach prescribed courses with established texts.
  • Conduct student conferences, hold required office hours, and attend to divisional and college duties.
  • Contribute to program development, adhere to professional ethics, and maintain current competence in the discipline.
  • Answer emails responsibly and advise students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including assisting during state-declared emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in the teaching field with demonstrated competencies, awarded by a regionally accredited institution whose respiratory therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
  • Active, unexpired Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Active, unexpired Commonwealth of Virginia licensure as a respiratory therapist with no restrictions.
  • Two (2) years of full-time occupational experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Part-time experience will be converted to full-time equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience teaching as an appointed faculty member in a CoARC-accredited respiratory care program or as a clinical instructor/preceptor for such programs.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Credentials such as Neonatal Pediatric Specialist (NPS), Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT), or Adult Critical Care Specialty (ACCS) from the NBRC.
  • Four (4) or more years of experience as a registered respiratory therapist.
  • Experience teaching culturally, linguistically, socio-economically, and academically diverse learners at the college level.
  • Certification and/or experience in teaching hybrid or online courses.

Skills

  • Ability to effectively teach classroom, laboratory, and clinical components of the Respiratory Therapy Program.
  • Proficiency in using technology to enhance instruction, including online resources and the current Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, PowerPoint, and the Internet.
  • Ability to teach topics such as pharmacology, hemodynamics, respiratory physiology, respiratory mechanics, and pulmonary functions.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to complete assignments accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty to enrich knowledge and support program goals.
  • Willingness to participate in academic activities including graduation, recruitment, and student life events.
  • Ability to perform ongoing assessment of learners using formative and summative tools.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to balance teaching responsibilities with program administration and act as a liaison with clinical affiliates.
  • Knowledge of the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) procedures and regulations.
