About the role

Paul D. Camp Community College is a small 2-year college in Southeast Virginia with campuses in Franklin and Suffolk and a center in Smithfield. The college offers associate degrees, certificates, and career studies certificates in transfer and career/technical programs; credit and non-credit workforce services and training; special interest classes; and summer classes for youth. Dual enrollment, online courses, and developmental studies classes are also available.

Responsibilities

• Plan, teach, and evaluate students in clinical, lab, and simulation areas for Associate Degree Nursing (ADN), Practical Nursing, and Nurse Aide programs.
• Provide classroom instruction and support lab/skills settings; coordinate and implement simulated activities; develop orientation modules for clinical facilities.
• Ensure positive representation of the nursing profession and college; maintain a supportive role for students.
• Meet all clinical partner requirements; become familiar with the nursing program philosophy, objectives, policies, and the Nursing Student Handbook.
• Confer with Lead Instructor/program dean regarding clinical rotation plans, agencies, and student groups; plan faculty orientation with agency personnel.
• Plan student orientation to clinical areas per agency policy; select patient assignments and learning experiences aligned with classroom instruction and student needs.
• Conduct pre- and post-clinical conferences; assist students in integrating and reinforcing learning; supervise and guide students using the nursing process.
• Serve as a role model and resource; be accessible to students at all times in clinical; review, correct, and comment on care plans and written assignments; return feedback by the following week.
• Evaluate and record student progress; confer at the end of each rotation and midterm; maintain a climate conducive to learning.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with clinical agency staff; maintain records of student absences and report concerns to Lead Faculty/program dean.
• Assist with teaching skills in the campus Skills Laboratory and simulation lab.
• Contribute to all activities related to the mission of the College and the Program; demonstrate concern and dedication to student education.
• Maintain mastery of teaching expertise; assist with student guidance, advisement, and curricula planning for the ADN program.
• Use varied teaching/learning strategies to promote inquiry and stimulate learning; ensure timely progression toward graduation by registering students for appropriate course sequences.
• Ensure student folders are current and complete with required clinical documentation; counsel students on academic progress; support achievement through referrals and tutoring.
• Hold membership and participate in professional organizations at local, state, and/or national levels; pursue scholarly activities through research, publications, and conference presentations.
• Provide assistance or act as a consultant to educational or other agencies; advance expertise through additional study in areas of specialization.
• Maintain an active role in nursing program and college activities through committee participation and College-sponsored events; support student recruitment and retention.
• Support College standards through effective teaching focused on student promotion and graduation; foster student socialization via mission alignment, individual instruction, and personal guidance.
• Maintain compliance with all clinical and VCCS requirements; participate in public service activities that promote well-being in the College’s service region, state, and nation.

Requirements

• A valid, active, and currently unencumbered Registered Nursing License in Virginia or a compact state.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
• A minimum of two (2) years’ full-time work experience in the field.
• Ability to work well with nursing faculty and students to facilitate learning.
• Demonstrated ability to provide a high level of instruction and engage in a positive academic environment to support students with varying academic and other needs for support.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students and other college stakeholders.
• Current CPR (BLS for healthcare providers) and documentation of all routine healthcare employee immunizations.
• Flexible schedule; ability to travel to Franklin and Suffolk campuses and various hospitals.
• Must complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education every two years (per state licensure requirements).
• Must be able to meet all clinical partner requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Nursing.
• Experience with clinical coordination.
• Experience with nursing clinical simulation use in nursing education or willingness to learn.
• Experience with lab skills training in nursing education or willingness to learn.
• Recent acute care experience.
• Teaching and/or preceptorship experience in nursing.
• Experience with instruction in the Virginia Community College System.
