9-1-1 Dispatcher/Telecommunicator

About the Role

The Lansing Police Department is seeking a full-time Telecommunicator to work in its Dispatch Center. This role operates within a 24x7 environment, requiring shift work that varies across Monday through Sunday. No residency requirement exists for this position.

Job Duties

• Receives, evaluates, prioritizes, and dispatches police, fire and emergency medical service calls.
• Answers emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and responds accordingly.
• Monitors and broadcasts information to field units and provides them with information, as required.
• Enters warrants, missing persons, and stolen/lost property into LEADS/NCIC.
• Maintains warrant files.
• Performs Emergency Medical Dispatch and pre-arrival instructions.
• Performs other ancillary duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Self-motivated, with exceptional multi-tasking and organizational skills, able to work in a high stress environment with a minimal amount of direct supervision.
• Computer literate.
• Must be a United States Citizen.
• Must pass a thorough background investigation, including polygraph and psychological examinations.
• Must be of good moral character.
• Must be at least eighteen (18) years old.
• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
• Able to work shift work, weekends, holidays, and/or extended hours when necessary.
• Must have good public relations and telephone skills.
• Must have a good performance record in current assignment.
• Qualified lateral hire experience must be from a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP).

Pay

• Starting: $26.1606 per hour / $54,414.15 annual, plus benefits
• After 1 Year of Completed Service (2026): $31.1862 per hour / $64,867.39 annual
• After 2 Years of Completed Service (2026): $32.0561 per hour / $66,676.65 annual
• Lateral Starting:
  • $26.1606 per hour / $54,414.15 annual (less than 12 months experience)
  • $31.1862 per hour / $64,867.39 annual (12-24 months experience)
  • $32.0561 per hour / $66,676.65 annual (24+ months experience)
