8202 - Security Guard - Fine Arts Museum
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are the city's largest public arts institutions, comprising the de Young and the Legion of Honor museums. The de Young showcases American art from the 17th through the 21st centuries, international contemporary art, textiles, costumes, and art from the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa. The Legion of Honor displays a collection spanning over 4,000 years of ancient and European art, including Auguste Rodin's The Thinker, and houses the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts.
About the role
This is a Temporary Exempt (TEX) as-needed security guard position. The role is exempt from the Civil Service examination process and does not include City health or retirement benefits. Assignments are day shifts (9:15 am – 5:30 pm) from Tuesdays to Sundays. Incumbents must be available to work a minimum of 2–3 days per workweek and can only change their availability once every ninety days. Assignments may include special events and additional shifts at either the de Young Museum or the Legion of Honor.
Responsibilities
- Patrol galleries and assigned areas to prevent unauthorized entry and safeguard property.
- Observe, report, and respond to criminal activity, safety hazards, persons needing assistance, and other unusual conditions.
- Handle emergency situations, including notifying supervisors or authorities and reporting information clearly and accurately.
- Communicate using a two-way radio and telephone.
- Check doors, lights, and equipment for proper functioning and report defects.
- Perform incidental duties such as operating elevators, minor maintenance, and cleanup tasks.
- Stand for the majority of the shift (5–8 hours) on hard floor surfaces.
- Lift, carry, and place 25 lbs stanchions for crowd control.
- Respond to emergencies by climbing stairs, moving rapidly, bending, crouching, kneeling, assisting in medical responses, evacuating visitors, or assisting with temporary exhibits.
Requirements
- One year of verifiable experience as a security officer.
- Current California Security Guard Registration Card issued by the California State Bureau of Security and Investigative Services.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
Qualifications
- Experience working in a museum or cultural institution.
- Experience working near high-value art or fragile/valuable materials.
- Ability to interact with the public professionally.
- Prior customer service experience.
- Current CPR certification (desirable).
Pay
$37.4875/hour (as of July 1, 2026).
Schedule
- Day shifts: 9:15 am – 5:30 pm, Tuesdays through Sundays.
- Minimum of 2–3 days per workweek, with shifts assigned 3 days in advance.
- Hours fluctuate based on availability and business needs.
