About the role
The Academy of St. Matthias the Apostle in Lanham, Maryland is seeking a 4th Grade Teacher for the 2026-27 school year. This is a full-time role reporting directly to the Principal.
Responsibilities
- Deliver instruction aligned with Archdiocese of Washington Academic and Religious Standards.
- Utilize Standardized Test scores and other assessment tools to adjust lesson plans and inform instruction.
- Create learner-centered lesson plans addressing the diverse needs of all students.
- Plan and deliver balanced instruction incorporating direct, guided, individual/group practice, questioning, and discovery methods.
- Administer both formal and informal assessments to determine instructional effectiveness and differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs.
- Assign class and homework that supports lesson objectives and reinforces the learning process.
- Establish and enforce classroom procedures that optimize instructional time and maintain a positive learning environment based on mutual respect and cooperation.
- Maintain a grade book reflecting students' progress and communicate status to parents and administration.
- Inform students and parents of assignments, projects, and due dates through various means including email, notes home, and phone calls.
- Routinely post updated information to the school’s grade book portal and conduct quarterly progress reports and report cards.
- Foster and support Catholic beliefs, traditions, and practices, and witness service to others.
- Lead and encourage prayer in the classroom and plan and teach religion classes aligned with ADW Religion Standards.
- Attend and participate in Catholic liturgical ceremonies and faculty/professional development meetings.
- Perform non-instructional duties such as carpooling, recess, lunch, and classroom teacher substitution as required.
- Sponsor clubs and other school activities as required.
- Attend Home and School meetings and other after-hours school events as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- Current teacher certification in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC (candidates have 3 years from hire to earn their certification)
- Knowledge of child development and supervision
- Experience teaching in an elementary school setting (preferred)
Qualifications
- Obtain Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia certification within three years of the date of hire.
- Obtain required religious certification (as required).
