About the role

Apprentice will receive classroom and on-the-job training for Construction Laborer Civil. Shadow and assist Civil Journeyman in the planning, layout, and installation of forms, rebar, embeds, and anchor bolts for concrete structures in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards.

Responsibilities

• Use appropriate hand (e.g., hammer, pliers) and power tools (e.g., skill saw, concrete vibrator) to measure, cut, assemble, and install forms, rebar, embeds, and anchor bolts.
• Construct built-in-place or prefabricated wooden forms according to specifications for molding concrete structures.
• Erect built-in-place forms or assemble and install prefabricated forms; insert spreaders and tie-rods to maintain specific dimensions.
• Anchor and brace forms to fixed objects using nails, bolts, anchor rods, steel cables, planks, and timber.
• Build wooden structures such as scaffold supports and frame shelters according to specifications.
• Pour concrete into finished forms to specified textures; vibrate, level, smooth, and shape the surface of concrete.
• Finish concrete surfaces to specifications; remove rough or defective spots using power grinder or chisel and hammer; patch holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound.
• Install all other items in accordance with applicable plans and specifications.
• Participate in all safety-related processes and programs; engage with the work team to achieve zero injuries.
• Understand that no job is so important that safety will be compromised; watch for hazards and report concerns to supervisor or safety professional.
• Use stop-work authority to resolve safety issues.
• Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation processes as needed.
• Participate in pre-job work planning and safety discussions; identify and mitigate safety hazards.
• Understand and respond appropriately to safety hazards and warning devices (e.g., back-up alarms, smell of smoke, warning tags, sirens).
• Follow lockout/tagout procedures and attend site-specific training.
• Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills; perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers and fractions.
• Listen to co-workers' suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations; provide feedback and ask questions as appropriate.
• Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job.
• Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities.
• Produce quality work meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
• Learn to read and understand plans and specifications; visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
• Develop a complete understanding of contract plans and specifications for assigned work; plan, layout, diagram, and install equipment.

Requirements

• 0-6 months of experience or 0–1,000 hours working as a carpenter or similar civil craft.
• Develop knowledge of auto-level and transit for accurate layout and verification of finished grades.
• Fabrication and erection of forms with thorough knowledge of steel-framed forms (e.g., Symons).
• Fabrication and placement of rebar, including proper tying techniques.
• Placing, finishing, and sealing concrete.
• Must possess all necessary tools (see Industrial Carpenter tool list).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (e.g., criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search).

Qualifications

• Preferred: One or more of the following certifications:
  • NCCER Concrete Finishing
  • NCCER Carpenter
  • NCCER Reinforcing Ironwork
  • NCCER Rigger
  • NCCER Scaffolding
  • NCCER Fundamentals of Crew Leadership

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in confined or cluttered spaces and uneven areas.
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Repetitive movement and climbing (e.g., steel framework, stairs, ladders, scaffolds).
• Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions.
• Extensive walking throughout the shift.
• Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
• Work in extreme temperatures (above 90°F or below 32°F) and exposure to inclement weather (dust, wind, snow, rain).
• Work in bright or low-lighting conditions; exposure to distracting or uncomfortable noise levels.
• Work around hazardous equipment.
• This position is considered safety-sensitive.
