About the role

Shadow Solar Technician to assemble, install, or maintain solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on uneven terrain, roofs, or other structures in compliance with site assessment and schematics. May include measuring, cutting, assembling, and bolting structural framing and solar modules supporting systems.

Responsibilities

• Use appropriate hand tools (e.g., crescent wrench, pliers, hammer, screwdriver) and power tools (e.g., drills, impact wrenches) to perform a variety of functions to install photovoltaic (PV) systems in accordance with codes and standards using drawings, schematics, and instructions.
• Lay out, assemble, and install solar modules/panels support structures as specified.
• Install structural, mechanical, rack systems, and PV panels.
• Lift, carry, and hold building materials, tools, and supplies; clean tools, equipment, material, and work areas. Follow a "clean as you go" policy, ensuring work areas are clean before leaving the site.
• Participate in all safety-related processes and programs as requested. Engage with your work team to achieve zero injuries. Understand that no job is so important that safety is compromised. Watch for hazards and report concerns to your supervisor or safety professional. Use stop-work authority if needed.
• Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in the investigation process as needed.
• Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions. Identify safety hazards and take corrective action to eliminate or mitigate them.
• Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (e.g., back-up alarms, smell of smoke, warning tags, sirens).
• Understand, support, and follow lockout/tagout procedures. Attend site-specific training and follow all outlined procedures.
• Follow established safety rules and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills. Perform basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers and fractions accurately.
• Listen to co-workers' suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations, providing full attention and feedback when appropriate.
• Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job.
• Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities with co-workers in your craft when provided.
• Produce quality work meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
• Learn to read and understand plans and specifications. Visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
• Assist in the storage, planning, and layout of materials in accordance with plans and specifications. Assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently.
• Learn to observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement. Notify supervision of any hazards and use safety stop-work authority as needed.
• Examine and inspect field conditions to identify problems, inaccuracies, and continuous improvement measures. Take corrective actions as needed, reporting issues to supervision.

Requirements

• 1.5 – 2 years’ experience or 3001 - 4000 hours working as a laborer or in any construction craft as a helper.
• Develop knowledge of the assembly, installation, or maintenance of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
• Ability to understand and follow directions.
• Must have all necessary tools (see Solar Tool List).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected), which may include criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 52 pounds.
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven areas; see and hear naturally or with correction.
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls according to a set procedure; requires repetitive movement.
• Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
• Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside conditions.
• Requires extensive walking throughout the shift.
• Additional Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) may be required, such as Kevlar sleeves.
• Typical construction site environment with cramped workspaces and awkward positions.
• Work in very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures and exposure to inclement weather (dust, wind, snow, rain, etc.).
• Work in extremely bright or low lighting conditions.
• Exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
• Work around hazardous equipment.
• This position is considered safety-sensitive.

Schedule

Up to a 12-hour shift.
