About the Role

Assist in planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of all aspects of solar photovoltaic (PV) construction, including electrical, mechanical, and civil components in accordance with plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. This role involves measuring, cutting, assembling, and bolting structural framing and solar modules, as well as coordinating and motivating craft workers to accomplish work safely, correctly, and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Use hand tools (e.g., crescent wrench, pliers, hammer, screwdriver) and power tools (e.g., drills, impact wrenches) to install photovoltaic (PV) systems according to codes, standards, drawings, schematics, and instructions.
• Lay out, assemble, and install solar modules, panels, or support structures as specified.
• Apply weather sealing to arrays, buildings, or support mechanisms.
• Identify methods for orienting and mounting modules or arrays to ensure efficient installation, electrical configuration, or system maintenance.
• Resolve deficiencies in PV system installation or materials.
• Install required labels on solar system components and hardware.
• Determine materials, equipment, and installation sequences to maximize efficiency.
• Install active solar systems, including collectors, concentrators, pumps, or fans.
• Complete daily paperwork, including creating a one-week schedule, setting crew goals based on project unit rates, time cards, and pre-job safety planning.
• Review and execute job work packages for scheduled tasks.
• Lift, carry, and hold building materials, tools, and supplies; clean tools, equipment, materials, and work areas following a "clean as you go" policy.
• Perform routine, non-machine tasks such as solar panel installation and associated hardware.
• Participate in safety-related processes and programs to achieve zero injuries.
• Identify and report hazards, using stop-work authority when necessary.
• Report accidents and near misses; participate in investigations as needed.
• Engage in pre-job work planning and safety discussions.
• Monitor crew for heat-related injuries and stop work before heat stress occurs.
• Follow established safety rules and maintain a safe, clean work environment.
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers and fractions.
• Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers.
• Provide on-the-job training and mentoring to helpers and laborers.
• Produce quality work meeting plans, specifications, and industry standards.
• Read and interpret plans and specifications; visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
• Develop a complete understanding of contract plans and specifications for assigned work.
• Inspect employees' work for compliance with plans, specifications, and industry standards; correct deficiencies as needed.
• Identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures in field conditions; take corrective actions and report issues to supervision.
• Work in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by project supervision.
• Perform additional job-related duties as requested by supervisor.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of experience working as a Solar Installer or equivalent combination of education and experience in a construction setting.
• Working knowledge of solar photovoltaic construction and the assembly, installation, or maintenance of PV systems for ground or roof installation.
• Ability to understand and follow directions.
• Must possess all necessary tools (see Solar Installer Tool List).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.

• NCCER Concrete Finishing
• NCCER Carpenter
• NCCER Ironworker
• Other equivalent skilled craftsperson certifications related to the work being performed.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 52 pounds.
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in confined, cluttered, or uneven areas.
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Repetitive movement and climbing (e.g., steel framework, stairs, ladders, scaffolds).
• Work up to a 12-hour shift performing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions.
• Extensive walking throughout the shift.
• Additional PPE may be required (e.g., Kevlar sleeves).
• Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
• Exposure to very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures, inclement weather (dust, wind, snow, rain), and inadequate lighting.
• Exposure to distracting or uncomfortable sounds and noise levels.
• Work around hazardous equipment and at heights.
• This position is safety-sensitive.
