About the role

The Shift Supervisor is responsible for carrying out the production of protein meal, an ingredient in dry pet foods, at the plant facility. This position performs all plant functions—Unloader, Loader, Mixer, Float, and Captain—accurately, safely, and efficiently. The Shift Supervisor communicates with the Plant Manager, Assistant Manager, Production Technicians, and Administrative Assistants to ensure tasks are completed, including scheduling needs, and complies with all safety regulations, work rules, SOPs, and company policies. They ensure the production facility meets all cGMP and safety standards by maintaining cleanliness and proper upkeep.

Responsibilities

  • Train employees in all positions including unload board, setting up bays, unloading trucks, mixing, loading trucks, sampling trucks, making totes, and safety procedures.
  • Assign production technicians to positions daily.
  • Counsel and communicate with production technicians and discipline when necessary.
  • Communicate with management, human resources, and/or EHS regarding employee injury, driver injury, property damage, employee concerns, or questions.
  • Ensure management directives are completed.
  • Follow all quality control and food safety procedures.
  • Maintain excellent inventory control.
  • Use a scissor lift to obtain samples from bulk hopper trailers using a 15-foot rod weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • Open hopper doors on bulk hopper trailers and facilitate unloading by swinging an 8-10 pound rubber mallet to shake product loose.
  • Operate and front-end load bulk hopper trailers and super sacks.
  • Monitor processing system to ensure no issues with equipment or product.
  • Conduct inspections on bulk hopper trailers for inbound and outbound loads.
  • Collect samples from the production line and transport to lab for analysis.
  • Complete all paperwork associated with trailer inspections.
  • Seal hopper bottoms, tarps, and dry van doors.
  • Sweep facility floors with push broom and floor sweeper.
  • Use compressed air to clean super sacs and the facility.
  • Utilize a dump cart to weigh and empty product from production streams into designated areas.
  • Complete all required food safety, cGMP, and OSHA trainings as assigned.
  • Complete all paperwork associated with product movements.
  • Apply labels to super sacks.
  • Load and unload covered bulk hopper rail cars.
  • Clean magnets and other processing equipment according to cGMPs and SOPs.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices in the work area and comply with all food safety and safety rules and procedures.
  • Wear and maintain required protective clothing and equipment including safety glasses, steel toe safety shoes, and a hard hat; additional protective clothing may be needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, general education degree, or equivalent.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds from floor to waist frequently.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds from waist to crown occasionally.
  • Ability to shovel up to 50 pounds of animal protein and toss it approximately 3 feet.
  • Ability to frequently climb ladders and walk up several flights of stairs.
  • Ability to stand for the duration of the shift; work schedule may exceed 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to push or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, or bend to complete assignments.
  • Ability to work overhead.
  • Ability to work in hot or cold temperatures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Forklift certification and operational experience.
  • Front-end loader operation experience.
  • Skid steer operation experience.
  • OSHA training.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in a plant floor environment with frequent movement between locations throughout the day.
  • Regular exposure to production areas where noise levels may range from moderate to high.
  • Exposure to varying temperatures, dust, odors, moving mechanical equipment, and outdoor weather conditions when performing plant inspections or overseeing operations.
  • Frequent walking throughout the facility to monitor operations, conduct inspections, and support production activities.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, squat, climb stairs, reach, push, pull, and use hands and arms to operate equipment and perform job duties.
  • Ability to work safely around forklifts, front-end loaders, skid steers, conveyors, processing equipment, and other industrial machinery.
  • May be required to operate industrial equipment, including forklifts, front-end loaders, skid steers, and other material handling equipment, as business needs dictate.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through electronic communication methods.
  • Ability to inspect equipment, review production processes, and perform visual quality assessments throughout the facility.
  • Occasionally required to climb ladders, access elevated platforms, or enter confined operational areas while following all safety protocols.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Pay

The pay range for this role is $31–$35 USD per hour.

Schedule

3rd Shift: 9 pm – 5:30 am
