About the Role

Plan, lay-out, weld, install, and repair all types of specialty pipe, tubular products, structural products, or distinct metal alloy components in accordance with applicable plans, specifications, welding codes, and industry standards. Utilize a variety of hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to perform tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to measure, cut, assemble, weld, and install structural steel components, supports, valves, and other control equipment.
  • Test installed systems and ensure compliance with applicable plans and specifications.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, horizontal, or overhead positions.
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Weld special, rare, or unusual alloys such as Chromium, Nickel, Cobalt, Copper, Aluminum, or other specialty alloys.
  • Set up welding machines, adjust gas flow and pressure, and obtain desired flames.
  • Operate welding equipment, including electrodes, fluxes, and shielded gases, and understand welding processes.
  • Ensure on-site welds pass continuous quality audits.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of carbon steel and other alloy metals, as well as ANSI, AWS, and ASME codes.
  • Participate in all safety-related processes and programs, including pre-job planning, hazard identification, and stop-work authority.
  • Engage with work teams to achieve zero injuries and report all accidents or near misses.
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures and maintain a safe, clean work environment.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, provide feedback, and coordinate work with other crafts.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentoring to helpers and laborers.
  • Produce quality work meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Read and interpret plans, specifications, diagrams, prints, and orthographic/isometric drawings.
  • Develop a complete understanding of contract plans and specifications for assigned work.

Requirements

  • At least four years of pipe and structural welding experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in an industrial construction setting.
  • Must pass welding tests on multiple procedures and welding codes for specialty alloys.
  • Strong working knowledge of combo pipe and structural welding craft, as well as various welding codes and specifications.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Possess all necessary tools (see Pipe Welder tool list).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Project welding certificate through OCI Quality.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.

Qualifications

  • Multiple years of experience as a journeyman preferred.
  • One or more of the following certifications: NCCER Welding, NCCER Boilermaking, NCCER Pipefitting, NCCER Ironworking, NCCER Rigger.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in confined, cluttered, or uneven areas.
  • Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
  • Repetitive movement and ability to climb and maintain balance on steel frameworks, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Work up to a 12-hour shift in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions (hot, cold, dust, wind, snow, rain).
  • Work in cramped spaces, awkward positions, and in bright or inadequate lighting.
  • Exposure to distracting or uncomfortable sounds and noise levels, as well as hazardous equipment.
  • This position is considered safety-sensitive.
