About the role
The position involves laying out, welding, installing, and repairing all types of specialty pipe, tubular products, structural products, or distinct metal alloy components in accordance with applicable plans, specifications, welding codes, and industry standards. The role requires proficiency in various hand and power tools, including cutting torches, and adherence to specific welding processes and codes.
Responsibilities
- Use appropriate hand and power tools to measure, cut, assemble, weld, and install structural steel components; install supports, valves, and other control equipment; test installed systems; and install other related items in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Weld special, rare, or unusual alloys such as Chromium, Nickel, Cobalt, Copper, Aluminum, or any other specialty alloys.
- Set up machines, run lines, adjust gas flow and pressure, and obtain desired flames.
- Pass quality audits on continuous basis.
- Weld on-site must pass quality audits on a continuous basis.
- Engage with work teams to ensure zero injuries.
- Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigations.
- Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job.
- Provide on-the-job training and mentoring to helpers and laborers.
- Develop a complete understanding of contract plans and specifications and perform tasks accordingly.
Requirements
- At least four years of pipe and structural welding experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in an industrial construction setting.
- Must pass welding tests on multiple procedures and welding codes that are to be performed on the project on specialty alloys.
- Strong working knowledge of combo pipe and structural welder craft and various welding codes and specifications.
- Ability to understand and follow directions.
- Must have all necessary tools (see Pipe Welder tool list).
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Qualifications
- Multiple years of experience as a journeyman preferred.
- One or more of the following certifications: NCCER Welding, NCCER Boilermaking, NCCER Pipefitting, NCCER Ironworking, NCCER Rigger.
Skills
- Knowledge of operation of welding equipment, electrodes, fluxes, and shielded gases and welding processes.
- Basic knowledge of ANSI, AWS, and ASME codes.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers.
