About the role

Direct and supervise the planning, layout, installation, testing, repair, or maintenance of high voltage substation wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, motors, forms, rebar, embeds and anchor bolts, equipment and control systems in generating stations, substations, and in-service relays in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards. Plan and coordinate the efforts of the craft workers under your supervision and motivate them to accomplish the work safely, correctly and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Perform all principal duties and accountabilities of craft workers under your supervision
• Lead and support all safety-related processes and programs; engage with your work team to achieve zero injuries
• Understand scheduling, material control, and unit man-hour performance reporting; become familiar with the Field Progress Management System (FPMS)
• Create and execute a one-week schedule; set and execute crew goals based on project unit rates
• Review crew's timecards for correct hours and phase coding
• Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed
• Lead, complete, and sign off on daily pre-job safety planning; identify and mitigate safety hazards
• Assure all crew members understand, participate, and sign all pre-job safety planning tools
• Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (e.g., back-up alarms, smell of smoke, warning tags, sirens)
• Understand, support, implement, and follow lockout/tagout procedures
• Attend site-specific training and follow all outlined procedures
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills; perform basic arithmetic operations accurately
• Listen to suggestions, complaints, problems, and safety concerns; devise and implement action plans
• Consult with supervisor and HR on any issues
• Coordinate and communicate work with other crafts and co-workers; manage other crafts when needed
• Provide on-the-job training to individuals under your supervision
• Train/teach safety practices, policies, and procedures related to assigned tasks
• Perform task planning to safely and efficiently carry out assigned work
• Plan and communicate with supervisor to ensure adequate supply of tools, materials, and equipment
• Gain a complete understanding of the scope of work and related project parts
• Develop a thorough understanding of project plans, specifications, and schedule
• Conduct toolbox meetings; communicate safety concerns, work scope, plans, and schedules to crews
• Participate in quantity report collection as needed on a daily/weekly basis
• Assure employees produce quality work meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards
• Inspect subordinates' work for compliance with contract plans, specifications, and industry standards
• Ensure correct construction procedures are followed during installation
• Point out deficiencies, explain them, and take corrective action
• Observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards or need for adjustments
• Examine/inspect field conditions; identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures
• Ensure construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, and in good working order
• Complete Daily Equipment Inspections for equipment being used
• Complete performance reviews of craft workers according to Craft Performance Assessment (CPA) Guidelines
• Ensure subordinates are qualified to perform their work as it relates to their level

Requirements

• Working experience as a Substation Journeyman or equivalent combination of education and experience in an industrial construction setting
• Strong working knowledge of project specifications and high voltage electrical and civil industry standards
• Working knowledge of electrical substation components, auto-level and transit for accurate layout and verification of finished grades, fabrication and erection of forms (e.g., Symons), fabrication and placement of rebar, and placing, finishing, and sealing concrete
• Ability to set standards of excellence in leadership, safety, quality, and productivity for crew members
• Ability to understand and follow directions
• Must possess all necessary tools (see Substation Tool List)
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (e.g., criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search)

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a supervisor
• One or more of the following certifications:
  • NCCER Electrician
  • NCCER Carpenter
  • NCCER Concrete Finisher
  • NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations
  • NCCER Rigging
• For Crane Operations, an OSHA-approved certification is required (e.g., NCCCO or CIC Certification)

Work Environment / Physical Demands

Physical Demands:

• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven areas
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls
• Repetitive movement
• Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds
• Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions

Work Environment:

• Typical construction site environment
• Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions
• Work in very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures; exposure to inclement weather (dust, wind, snow, rain, etc.)
• Work in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions
• Exposure to distracting or uncomfortable sounds and noise levels
• Work around hazardous equipment
• This position is considered safety-sensitive
