About the Role

Assist journeyman in the planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of all aspects of substation construction in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. Responsibilities

  • Use appropriate hand (e.g., drill, screwdriver) and power tools (e.g., pipe threader, conduit bender) to measure, cut, assemble, and install electrical conduits, cable, and duct banks.
  • Hand dig ditches and holes.
  • Install control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays, circuit-breaker panels, grounding leads, and pull wire through conduit.
  • Work with high and low voltage systems.
  • Test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety using instruments like ohmmeters, battery and buzzer testers, and oscilloscopes.
  • Rig and set large high-voltage equipment, hang protective grounds, layout makeup, and install wire jumpers.
  • Operate equipment to excavate foundations, layout and install ground grids, spread rock, and maneuver man lifts in tight areas within energized substations.
  • Install all other related items in accordance with applicable plans and specifications.
  • Participate in all safety-related processes and programs, including hazard identification, stop-work authority, and incident reporting.
  • Engage in pre-job planning, safety discussions, and on-the-job training with co-workers.
  • Read and interpret plans and specifications, visualizing two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Assist in planning, installing, and repairing systems in alignment with plans and specifications.
  • Examine field conditions, identify problems, and take corrective actions as needed.
  • Operate and maintain construction equipment if certified, including completing daily inspections.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers and fractions accurately.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and other crafts, actively listening and providing feedback.
  • Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of experience working on substations, as an electrician, or in a similar craft as a helper, or a combination of work experience and training.
  • Developing knowledge of substation construction, testing, maintenance, and repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Possess all necessary tools (see Substation Helper Tool List).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including background checks, drug screens, and motor vehicle records searches.

Qualifications

  • NCCER Construction Craft Laborer certification.
  • NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in confined, cluttered, or uneven areas.
  • Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
  • Repetitive movement and use of hands to handle tools or controls.
  • Climb and maintain balance on steel frameworks, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Work up to a 12-hour shift performing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions (e.g., heat above 90°F, cold below 32°F, dust, wind, snow, rain).
  • Work in cramped spaces, awkward positions, and bright or inadequate lighting.
  • Exposure to distracting or uncomfortable sounds and noise levels, as well as hazardous equipment.
  • This position is considered safety-sensitive.
