About the Role

Assist journeyman in the planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of all aspects of substation construction in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards.

Responsibilities

• Use appropriate hand (e.g., drill, screwdriver) and power tools (e.g., pipe threader, conduit bender) to properly measure, cut, assemble, and install electrical conduits, cable, and duct banks.
• Hand dig ditches and holes.
• Install control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels, and install grounding leads and pull wire through conduit.
• Work with high and low voltage systems.
• Help test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using testing instruments such as ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope.
• Rig and set large high voltage equipment, hang protective grounds, layout makeup, and install wire jumpers.
• May utilize equipment to excavate for foundations, layout and install ground grid, utilize equipment to spread rock, operate man lift in tight areas in an energized substation.
• Install all other related items in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications.
• Participate in all safety-related processes and programs as requested.
• Engage with your work team to achieve zero injuries.
• Understand that no job is so important that your safety and that of your crew will be compromised.
• Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional.
• Use your stop work authority until safety issues are resolved.
• Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed.
• Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions; identify safety hazards and take corrective action.
• Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (e.g., back-up alarms, smell of smoke, warning tags, sirens).
• Understand, support, and follow lockout/tagout procedures.
• Attend site-specific training and follow all outlined procedures.
• Follow established safety rules and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Perform basic arithmetic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) with whole numbers and fractions accurately.
• Listen to co-workers' suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations, providing feedback when appropriate.
• Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job.
• Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities.
• Produce quality work meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
• Learn to read and understand plans and specifications, visualizing two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
• Assist in planning, installing, and/or repairing systems in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently.
• Learn to observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments or replacement.
• Notify supervision of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority as needed.
• Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures.
• Take corrective actions as needed, reporting issues to supervision.
• If certified to operate equipment, ensure it is correctly operated, maintained, and in good working order, completing daily equipment inspections.
• Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies.
• Perform all other actions necessary to accomplish the principal duties and accountabilities.

Requirements

• Experience working on substations or as an electrician or similar craft as a helper or laborer, and a basic knowledge of the substation field of work.
• Developing knowledge of the construction, testing, maintenance, and repair of substations.
• Ability to understand and follow directions.
• Must possess all necessary tools (see Substation Helper Tool List).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected), which may include criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.

Qualifications

• NCCER Construction Craft Laborer
• NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program

Work Environment / Physical Demands

• Physical Demands:
  • Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven areas.
  • See and hear naturally or with correction.
  • Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls according to a set procedure.
  • Requires repetitive movement.
  • Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside conditions.
• Work Environment:
  • Typical construction site environment.
  • Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
  • Work in very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures and exposure to inclement weather such as dust, wind, snow, rain, etc.
  • Work in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
  • Exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Work around hazardous equipment.
  • This position is considered safety-sensitive.
