About the role

Carrier, a global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions, seeks an experienced and dependable Lead Technician in its engineering laboratories. This role is responsible for test execution, running the chillers in water-cooled and air-cooled labs. Individuals should be capable of setting up the test environment, performing calibration, and driving efficient chiller operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Chiller test operation at high efficiency: Performs basic to moderately complex technical tasks contributing to the planning and execution of engineering projects.
  • Operates, inspects, and maintains chillers, test setups, and equipment.
  • Works with electrical equipment, including 460-3-60 machinery, with HVAC operation, refrigerant handling, and EPA certification.
  • Selects, connects, and troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, and refrigeration systems on Charlotte manufactured equipment.
  • Performs loop calibration, uses valves for single/double loop configuration, operates/troubleshoots/calibrates Power Management/VFD’s, boilers, and valve configurations.
  • Coaches team members, collaborates with cross-functional teams, and reports results/issues to relevant teams to drive resolution.
  • Maintains a safe and efficient lab environment by being an advocate of a safe workspace, 5S, and championing the corporation's EHS policy.
  • Supports lab uptime by reporting instrument failures and enhancing preventive maintenance.
  • Captures and reports test status, issue reporting, applies and teaches measurement techniques, test report writing, and systems troubleshooting.
  • Proactively resolves testing hurdles by consulting development and other relevant process partners.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 5+ years experience in Chiller/HVAC operations, stations, and chillers, or 5 years' experience in laboratory environments for mechanical/electrical machinery.
  • 2+ years of experience independently leading/run chillers, reporting results, and in loop tuning and drive test cycles/loop efficiency.
  • 5+ years of experience with hand/pneumatic tools, advanced shop mathematics, complex measuring equipment, and precision measuring instruments.

Preferred Requirements

  • AS or AAS in related technical field.
  • Technical/Business School Certificate or Skilled Trades Apprenticeship.
  • Technical expertise in HVAC design, components, and ability to lead/run chillers.
  • Understanding of close loop control systems, loop stability.
  • Reading and interpreting complex drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Experience with medium voltage operations, including arc flash and lockout/tagout procedures.

Work Environment

  • Hands-on role requiring frequent standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), climbing ladders, and working around moving mechanical equipment.
  • Exposure to temperature variations, refrigerants, compressed gases, and other lab-specific conditions.
  • Occasional after-hours or weekend work may be needed to support critical maintenance schedules.
