About the Role

The primary responsibility of the Assistant Custodian is to maintain, clean, and disinfect all areas of a facility including classrooms, offices, locker rooms, gymnasiums, and surrounding areas. Work requires the exercise of a high degree of initiative, a positive attitude, sound judgment, and discretion in the performance of these duties.

Responsibilities

The following duties are intended to describe the general nature and level of work. Actual duties may vary depending on building assignments and other factors.

  • Disinfect, rinse, dust, sweep, mop, remove graffiti, scrub, buff, and wax entire facility, including classrooms, restrooms, hallways, stairwells, common areas, offices, cafeteria, gymnasium, media center, locker rooms, auditoriums, stages, and custodial offices and storage areas.
  • Secure interior doors and turn out lights.
  • Check and replenish restroom supplies (toilet tissue, hand towels, soap, deodorizers, etc.) as needed.
  • Inspect facility and grounds for safety issues and debris; notify head custodian or administrator of hazardous or harmful situations.
  • Provide information to parents, facility visitors, and staff.
  • Assist with staff, public, students, teachers, and community groups authorized to use the building during assigned shift.
  • Set up and tear down furniture and equipment for special events, including locking/unlocking areas for access.
  • Change and replace damaged ceiling tiles, light bulbs, and HVAC filters as scheduled.
  • Assist with cleaning outside of buildings; remove debris and gravel; clean outside windows, doors, and lighting; clean exterior building gutters and roof drains.
  • Submit work order requests for building repairs.
  • Remove trash and debris from facility and grounds.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks.
  • Bring flag indoors in the evening, if applicable.
  • Provide clean-up for "body spills."
  • Perform special cleaning and renovation projects.
  • Perform seasonal, summer, and project cleaning as assigned.
  • Safely measure and mix chemicals.
  • Respond to emergency or critical incidents to confine, resolve, and/or prevent environmentally hazardous conditions.
  • Safely and proficiently operate large cleaning equipment.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Head Custodian, Principal, or Custodial Foreman.
  • Be willing to cover the Head Custodian position.

Requirements

  • Reliable transportation.
  • Ability to pass a District-designated post-offer lift test.
  • Must complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check and be cleared by the Office of Human Resources.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.

  • Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with all people, including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions.
  • Be honest and trustworthy.
  • Demonstrate a sound work ethic.
  • Operating knowledge of basic custodial equipment.
  • Previous school district experience is preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Standing, walking, sitting, use of hands and fingers, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Frequent use of telephone, computer keyboards, and other office equipment.
  • Continual hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally and carry up to 75 lbs. occasionally.
  • Pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
  • Frequent twisting, turning, pivoting, reaching overhead, and repetitive use of arms, wrists, and hands.

Work Environment

  • Moderate noise level, with potential exposure to very loud noises that can damage hearing without proper protection.
  • Work inside and outside in all weather conditions, including extreme cold and heat.
  • Exposure to unpleasant sights and smells.
  • Exposure to dangerous and/or toxic substances; must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose, and skin from irritation and infection.
  • Regular exposure to the possibility of cuts, serious injuries, and risk of electrical shock while using power tools.

Salary range follows the Custodian – ACME Salary Schedule.

261-day work year.
