26-27 SY Teacher, Full-Time- ESOL Program Specialist K-12

This is a partial, two-day-per-week position that must be matched with another school to create a full-time role. Teachers at the School District of Philadelphia (SDP) are full-time employees. If site-selected between July 6 and September 20, 2022, placement will be full-time at the assigned school until leveling, after which matching with another school is required. If site-selected after leveling but before spring site selection, pairing a partial placement is required before starting. Partial positions are not available for spring site selection.

About the Role

A teacher in the School District of Philadelphia plans and delivers instruction in their subject area, following the established scope and sequence for all courses. The role involves using real-life applications, simulations, and technology—including software—to help students analyze and interpret material. Teachers also use formal and informal assessments to guide instruction.

Responsibilities

• Assess student skill levels and align classroom goals with state and local standards.
• Provide instruction in the respective subject area.
• Use real-life applications and simulations to teach material.
• Encourage inquiry-based learning, experimentation, and alternative problem-solving approaches.
• Provide expertise in tools, materials, processes, and technology, including software applications.
• Design learning experiences that require students to demonstrate comprehension and use technological resources to solve problems.
• Foster inquiry-based learning using differentiated instruction.
• Create a classroom environment with access to subject-related materials tailored to student needs and interests.
• Collaborate with staff across disciplines to integrate subject-specific skills into the curriculum.
• Stay current with educational developments and attend faculty meetings to discuss school issues and teaching methods.
• Maintain classroom discipline, attendance records, grades, and other required documentation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate for the respective grade level and subject area, or an original, signed letter from a college/university Certification Officer verifying enrollment in an approved certification program to qualify for an Emergency Permit.

• Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of grade-level education.
• Subject-specific expertise and familiarity with educational materials, methodologies, and practices.
• Understanding of critical thinking, problem-solving techniques, and child growth and development theories.
• Familiarity with state standards, performance levels, and authentic performance assessment principles.
• Ability to use and apply technological innovations, including software, to address learning challenges.
• Ability to assess student needs and design differentiated instruction.
• Proficiency in using simulations and technology to support instructional strategies.
• Experience facilitating inquiry-based learning, as well as whole-class, small-group, and individual instruction.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, parents, and students.

Schedule

• This is a two-day-per-week, partial position requiring matching with another school to form a full-time role.
• Regular, non-management, non-exempt (overtime-eligible) position under the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT) union affiliation.
