About the Role

A teacher in the School District of Philadelphia plans and teaches their subject area, following the scope and sequence for all courses. The role involves providing instruction through real-life applications and simulations, using tools, materials, processes, and technology—including software applications—to develop lessons and assess student comprehension.

Responsibilities

• Assesses the skill level of students and aligns classroom goals and activities to established state and local standards.
• Provides instruction in respective subject area(s).
• Instructs students using real-life applications and simulations.
• Teaches inquiry techniques that encourage experimentation and alternative approaches to problem-solving.
• Provides technical expertise in the use of tools, materials, processes, and applications of technology, including pertinent software.
• Designs learning experiences requiring students to demonstrate comprehension of concepts and use technological resources to solve problems.
• Encourages students to use learned skills for inquiry-based learning.
• Creates a classroom environment with access to subject-related materials addressing students' needs and interests.
• Collaborates with staff within and across disciplines to integrate subject-specific skills across the curriculum.
• Stays updated on the latest developments and improvements in education affecting the instructional program.
• Attends faculty meetings to discuss school problems and teaching methods.
• Maintains classroom discipline.
• Maintains attendance, grades, and other required records.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate in the respective grade level and subject area, or an original, signed letter from the Certification Officer of an accredited college or university verifying current enrollment in an approved certification program to be eligible for an Emergency Permit.

Certain subjects/roles (e.g., art, dance, theater, music, world languages, vocational/CTE, itinerant, and/or bilingual) require additional eligibility steps. The Recruiter will provide next steps if applicable.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, parents, and students.

Salary is determined by experience in education and educational attainment. Both prior experience and degree must go through the District’s verification process for final confirmation.
