About the role
This position serves as the principal of an elementary school under administrative supervision. The role involves providing strategic direction and overseeing the execution of all plans and activities of the district's curriculum.
Responsibilities
- Hiring, training, counseling, evaluating staff performance, and recommending the disciplining and/or discharging of staff.
- Preparing and administering building budget(s).
- Overseeing the procurement of books, supplies, materials and equipment ensuring expenditures are within the approved budget(s).
- Maintaining current knowledge of best practices, trends and new developments in elementary school curriculum, instruction and building administration.
- Recommending and implementing changes to operations and instructional strategies as necessary.
- Ensuring departmental staff maintains required credentials and facilitating on-going development opportunities that align with district strategies and objectives.
- Maintaining accurate personnel, student and fiscal records; protecting and ensuring confidentiality; ensuring required documentation and reports are complete.
- Establishing and maintaining communication with central office administrators, building staff, students, parents and others; articulating and promoting the vision and mission of the building.
- Creating a positive and cooperative atmosphere that encourages and motivates students and staff; promoting positive school-community relations by clearly communicating school messages to parents and members of the community; responding to parental and community inquiries in a timely and courteous manner, encouraging/promoting parental participation in school activities; providing support to parent organizations and maintaining visibility with students, parents and the community.
- Tracking student achievement and progress toward instructional goals and objectives of the building and district; initiating corrective action as necessary.
- Working cooperatively with intervention assistance team, guidance counselors, student safety resource coordinator, and others to implement various initiatives to decrease student drop-out rates, increase academic success and ensure students can achieve their appropriate grade level.
- Monitoring school building areas to ensure safe conditions and compliance with Federal, state and local health and safety standards.
- Developing and executing of the building’s emergency and crisis plans to include fire/emergency drills.
- Planning, coordinating, and executing assigned grade level activities.
- Supporting the implementation of after school activities and events by attending activities/events and ensuring acceptable student behavior at all school sanctioned/sponsored activities/events.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in education, educational leadership, administration or a related field required at time of appointment.
- Seven (7) years of successful, licensed teaching experience with Columbus City Schools or a comparable school district, and one (1) year of school-based administrator experience (principal or assistant principal only).
- State of Ohio Principal license (Grades PK-6).

- Considerable knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and district policies related to assigned functions;
- Considerable knowledge of curriculum development and implementation;
- Considerable knowledge of student information systems and learning platforms;
- Considerable knowledge of laws related to student rights, teacher contracts, discipline, and special education.
