About the role

The Assistant Principal, Elementary serves under the supervision of the Principal, Elementary School. This position assists with strategic direction and oversees the execution of all plans and activities of the district's curriculum, ensuring that student learning experiences align with the mission and instructional goals of the district.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of building staff, including hiring, training, counseling, and evaluating staff performance.
  • Affords support and guidance to staff engaged in student instruction, promoting improvements in curriculum and instruction within the building.
  • Maintains oversight of student achievement and progress towards instructional goals and objectives, initiating corrective action as needed.
  • Administers the student behavior and discipline program, counseling and guiding students on personal, academic, and behavioral issues.
  • Investigates and addresses student-related issues and concerns, developing a plan of action to resolve problems.
  • Works collaboratively with intervention assistance teams, guidance counselors, student safety resource coordinators, and others to implement initiatives aimed at increasing academic success and ensuring students can achieve their grade level.
  • Plans, coordinates, and executes student activities and programs such as student recognition, school dances, and the Student of the Month program.
  • Aids in the development of the master schedule and class scheduling for students.
  • Maintains school building areas to ensure safe conditions and compliance with federal, state, and local health and safety standards.
  • Manages the transportation of students to and from school.
  • Assumes the duties of Athletic Director/Coordinator, administering the athletic program for the building.
  • Creates and promotes a positive and cooperative atmosphere that encourages and motivates students and staff; ensures rules are fairly and consistently administered.
  • Supports the implementation of the building's after-school activities and events by attending activities/events and ensuring acceptable student behavior.
  • Prepares or oversees the completion of required documentation and reports.
  • Promotes positive school-community relations by clearly communicating school messages to parents and members of the community, responding to parental and community inquiries in a timely and courteous manner, and maintaining visibility with students, parents, and the community.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate communication and relationships with all departments and officials of appropriate agencies.
  • Solves problems, situations, or issues in a collaborative, tactful, courteous, and respectful manner.
  • Performs the duties of Principal in the absence of the Principal.
  • Maintains current knowledge of best practices, trends, and new developments in middle school curriculum, instruction, and building administration.
  • Recommends changes to operations and instructional strategies as necessary.

Requirements

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education, educational leadership, administration, or a related field required at the time of appointment.
  • Five (5) years of successful, licensed teaching experience with Columbus City Schools or a comparable school district, and one (1) year of school-based administrator experience (current CCS employees without administrative experience may be considered if the valid principal licensure requirement is met).
  • State of Ohio Principal license (Grades PK-6).
