Summary Of Classification

The Connecticut Teacher Residency Program is an alternate route to certification program focused on increasing educators of color in elementary schools within Waterbury Public Schools. Resident candidates will be enrolled in rigorous coursework for 18 months and serve in a paid residency position in a Mentor Teacher's classroom for the school year. Mentor Teachers will work side-by-side with their Resident and be supported by the program coordinator for one academic school year to help Residents prepare for a successful career in education.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • General Experience: Accepted into CREC's CT Teacher Residency Program.
  • Special Requirement: Background investigation may be made prior to appointment.
  • Credentials: Bachelor's degree required including a minimum of 39 semester hours of credit in general academic courses: In five of the six areas listed below. English; Natural sciences; Mathematics; Social studies; and Foreign language; or Fine arts; Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements: Current Motor Vehicle Class D Operator's License may be required.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the field of education; Some knowledge of core curriculum areas for which the CT Teacher Resident is responsible for instructing, including specialized knowledge in certain fields such as reading, mathematics, science, music, art, languages, and so forth, as appropriate; Some knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching methods and approaches, and currently researched best practices and strategies; Some knowledge of child development; Some knowledge of classroom management techniques; Some knowledge of instructional technologies; Some knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Scientific Research-Based Interventions (SRBI); Some knowledge of community resources; Excellent listening skills; Ability and flexibility to interact effectively with students, parents, and other school staff, the administration, and community members of diverse ethnic/racial and socioeconomic backgrounds; Ability to adapt teaching styles to diverse student populations; Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Ability to multi-task and be flexible; Ability to utilize computer and multimedia technology, as appropriate;

Essential Functions

  • Serve in a Resident position under the guidance of a designated Mentor Teacher for the academic school year for the hours designated by the Partner school district;
  • Plan instruction and meet with Mentors at times beyond the staff required hours (meetings can be planned for up to 2 additional hours per week);
  • Complete 18 months of coursework running 6 weeks each summer (must be available to attend all summer classes), during cohort meetings and evenings during the school year;
  • Attend district and school-based professional development sessions;
  • Pass assessments (edTPA, Foundations of Reading Test and Praxis II) for Connecticut State certification 305 Elementary grades 1 - 6;
  • Upon successful completion of the program and certification requirements, commit to accepting a classroom teaching position in the District for a period of three years.
