About the role
The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is seeking highly motivated and energetic applicants for openings for the 2025-2026 school year. Applicants should have a good attitude, willingness to learn, and passion for impactful work and learning.
Responsibilities
- Perform cleaning and maintenance tasks aligned to District standards for various interior/exterior building fixtures, including all flooring, restrooms, ceilings, and wall surfaces in classrooms, hallways, gyms, offices, cafeterias, and nurses stations as well as removing all trash and recycling
- Refill necessary supplies, including paper products, throughout the building, including custodial carts and storage areas
- Assist in loading and unloading with various building deliveries
- Process room moves and teacher requests
- Willingness to learn and ability to process building permits
- Set-up, take down, and clean building events and permit holders
- Complete minor preventive maintenance including, but not limited to, lamp replacement, dispenser installation, custodial equipment, repairing lockers, window latches, door hinges, and washing windows
- Perform outdoor duties including, but not limited to, trash pick-up, landscaping, mowing, string trimming, snow removal, ice removal, salting, sanding, and other seasonal maintenance
- Safety and security duties including, but not limited to, reporting safety and fire hazards to supervisor, arming security systems, security checks of buildings and grounds, turning out lights, locking all windows and doors
- Communicate information and receive requests from school staff, the public, student and others who are using the building, related to the performance of custodial services
- Provide quality customer service and communication to support staff and students
- Dress appropriately per Employee Handbook section 3.29, with Photo I.D. visible
- Work varied shifts as assigned as needed
- Review, enter and sign off tasks for completion (e.g., work orders, preventative maintenance) in EAM as required
- Carry and respond to any assigned district-provided communication devices (e.g., phones, radio)
Requirements
Successful completion of custodial trainee program
Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation
Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward one’s own cultural competence (i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one’s skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas)
Experience working independently, in teams, and leading others
Qualifications
Knowledge and appropriate use of cleaning materials, solutions, and procedures
Skills
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to take initiative and prioritize the completion of assigned tasks
- Ability to communicate and work effectively and professionally with and serve school district personnel, students, and the community
- Ability to lead others and share knowledge related to job duties
- Ability to clearly communicate in English for emergency response situations
- Knowledge and appropriate use of cleaning materials, solutions, and procedures

Pay
$26.77 starting compensation
Schedule
Hours for this position will be an 8-hour shift between 2:00 pm - 12:00 am, with starting times at 2:00, 3:00 or 4:00 pm. During the summer, the hours are between 7:00 am - 10:00 pm, with start times at 7:00 am, 12:00 pm, or 2:00 pm.

Physical and Sensory Requirements
- Work may require travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings
- Position may require working evenings, nights, and some weekends
- School-based positions are required to be in-person unless otherwise directed by the building principal
