Job Goals
The mission of The Calculus Project is to increase the representation and success of Black, Hispanic, and low-income students in advanced mathematics. Peer Mentors/Teachers at TCP provide academic support, assist with program activities, and serve as positive role models.
Qualifications/Expectations
- SHS students or recent SHS alumni who have participated in TCP in past summers, are passionate about STEM, or aspire to be mathematics teachers are encouraged to apply.
- Effective communication with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Treatment of all staff and students with respect, identification and response to biased and hateful incidents.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience interning in a mathematics classroom or working with youth in a summer program.
- Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole language proficiency.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a grade-level team including a Lead Teacher, Associate Teacher, and other peer teachers.
- Create a nurturing learning environment, maintain high behavioral and academic standards, and foster a culture of collaboration and exploration.
- Support the Lead Teacher with a group of 20-25 students daily.
- Pre-learn topics in Precalculus, Calculus, or Statistics to prepare for the school year.
- Facilitate the Count Forward curriculum, helping students learn about achievements of STEM professionals of color.
- Chaperone small groups of students during field trips.
- Attend up to 1.5 hours/week of daily debriefs with TCP summer staff.
- Report incidents to summer leadership team and other relevant staff as required.

- Location: East Somerville Community School
- Stipend: $18.28/hour
- Mandatory Orientation and Professional Development Days: Week of June 22, 2026
- Program Schedule: July 6, 2026 – July 31, 2026 (Monday through Friday)
- Students: 6 hours/day, 9am-2pm
- Staff: 6 hours/day, 9am-2:30pm, includes 30 minutes lunch
- Position Reports to: Assistant Superintendent for Academics, Director of Equity & Excellence, TCP Director, Director of Summer Programs
