About the role
The mission of The Calculus Project is to increase the representation and success of Black, Hispanic, and low-income students in advanced mathematics. This summer, Somerville Public Schools partners with the Calculus Project Organization to implement the TCP program. As a summer Lead Teacher, you will design a curriculum for four weeks, focusing on key topics from the SPS honors fall curriculum. You will work closely with an Associate Teacher and a Peer Teacher/Mentor to provide direct instruction and support.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct instruction on Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and/or Calculus
- Collaborate with a grade-level team including an Associate Teacher and a Peer Teacher/Mentor (teen staff)
- Create a nurturing learning environment, maintain high behavioral and academic standards, and foster a culture of collaboration and exploration
- Design rigorous, grade-level appropriate activities that address student skill gaps and develop conceptual understanding and procedural proficiency
- Review student assignments to track progress and plan instruction
- Support Associate Teachers during small group time
- Modify pre-/post-assessments and analyze results with Associate Teacher and Program Director
- Facilitate the Count Forward curriculum, where students learn about accomplishments of STEM professionals of color
- Adapt short-term projects to fit the allotted time and targeted summer learning goals
- Supervise Peer Teacher/Mentors as they lead an afternoon club with up to 15 students
- Chaperone a small group of students during field trips
- Attend up to 1.5 hours/week of daily debriefs with TCP summer staff
- Respond to behavior concerns, conflicts, and crises as they arise
- Report incidents to summer leadership team and other relevant staff as required; ensure that all required documents are completed as part of the reporting process
Qualifications/Expectations
- MA DESE Educator License in Mathematics, 5-8 or 9-12
- At least three years of experience working in middle or high school setting
- Demonstrate creativity and foster curiosity and excitement about learning mathematics
- Communicate effectively with students and staff from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds
- Treat all staff and students with respect at all times, identify biased and hateful incidents, and respond appropriately
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with youth in a summer program
- Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole language proficiency is a plus
