2026 Environmental Police Officer C
About the role
This examination is being administered by the Human Resources Division (HRD) to create an eligible list from which to fill Environmental Police Officer C vacancies in the Massachusetts Environmental Police (MEP) Agency.
Responsibilities
- Enforce the laws of the Commonwealth and federal laws pertaining to the protection of our natural resources, wetlands, and waterways;
- Commercial and recreational outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and boating;
- Commercial and recreational vehicles;
- Marine fisheries;
- Forests and parks;
- Hazardous waste;
- Water and air pollution.
Requirements
- To be eligible for this examination you must: (1) be an employee in the Massachusetts Environmental Police Agency with permanent civil service status in the title of Environmental Police Officer A/B; and (2) have been employed in the eligible title after certification from a civil service list, on a permanent or temporary civil service basis for twelve months immediately preceding the examination date.
- A combination of temporary and permanent service can be applied towards meeting this twelve month requirement.
- Time spent pursuant to a temporary appointment in the title of Environmental Police Officer C will not interrupt the service period in your permanent position.
Qualifications
Section 9. Pursuant to the provisions of this section, an appointing authority may make a promotional appointment within a departmental unit on the basis of a departmental promotional examination. Such departmental promotional examination shall be open, until there are at least two employees in lower titles eligible to apply, only to persons who have been employed in the departmental unit as civil service employees for at least one year immediately preceding the date of the examination, who have no permanent status in such unit in a title higher than the examination title, and who have been employed in such unit as civil service employees in a title equal to that of the position for which the examination is to be held or in the next lower titles, as determined by the administrator, for at least one year at any time preceding the date of the examination.
Skills
Technical Knowledge (TK): The written examination will measure a candidate’s applicable technical knowledge of relevant job duties and, where practicable, the following knowledges, skills and abilities which have been established as qualifications for the position: problem solving; planning and prioritizing, discretion/decision making, integrity/ethics, leadership, adaptability and empathy/social welfare.

All candidates must complete the 2026 Environmental Police Officer C E&E Claim application online. This is a separate application. Submitting an E&E claim in any way other than through the online claim process will result in a failed examination component.
