Environmental Officer

About the role

Interprets federal and state laws, regulations, and orders as they apply to environmental practices. Implements policies and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, and regulatory reporting requirements. Ensures inspections are conducted, corrective actions are completed on time, and all necessary documentation is maintained.

Investigates and resolves compliance problems, questions, or complaints from within the company, customers, or government regulatory agencies. May develop and implement programs to increase employee awareness and knowledge of compliance policies.

Audits and evaluates current policies, procedures, and documentation for compliance with government laws and regulations. Interacts with state, federal, and local organizations to stay informed of and influence regulatory and plant standard changes concerning waste accumulation, disposal, and minimization.

Conveys pertinent environmental information and guidance to laboratory management and personnel, promoting environmental excellence. Provides support and guidance on waste minimization and accumulation activities. Assists training personnel to determine environmental compliance training needs.

Reviews technical procedures to ensure proper operation and maintenance of environmental and PCB storage areas. Assists waste management personnel in completing disposal forms. Ensures waste is characterized, documented, segregated, packaged, labeled, and stored according to approved procedures and regulatory requirements for RCRA, TSCA, mixed, and radiological wastes.

Develops, implements, and maintains written organizational procedures in areas such as RCRA, TSCA, and Spill Prevention, and assists in training on these procedures.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science (Chemistry, Physics, or related) from an ABET-accredited program in the U.S., or designated equivalents from Canada, Mexico, the Washington Accord, or substantially equivalent programs documented by ABET. OR MS in Engineering/Physical Science. OR PhD in Engineering/Physical Science.
• Minimum GPA requirements (confirmed by transcript):
  • 3.0/4.0 for Bachelor’s degree (up to 4 years post-graduation)
  • 3.3 for Master’s degree
  • 3.5 for PhD

  Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement.

• Requires a Department of Energy Q clearance; ability to obtain and maintain this clearance is required.
• May require entry into Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), including a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and possible counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
• May be categorized as a “designated position” under 10 C.F.R. Part 709, requiring a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and possible counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
• U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance applicants.
• Subject to random drug testing without advance notification.
