2026-27 SPED 1:1 ASL Interpreter - Liberty ES

Interim 9-month position at Liberty Elementary School, 6.5 hours per day.

About the role

The Certified Educational Interpreter-Sign Language provides support to the instructional program by delivering exact interpretations for special-needs students in one-on-one or small-group settings, following educational and behavioral plans, and documenting daily activities. This role reports to a Teacher and/or Site Administrator.

Responsibilities

• Provides simultaneous sign-language interpretations during the educational day in small-group or individual settings.
• Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
• Provides instruction to students (e.g., math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, job skills) under the supervision of the assigned teacher to implement IEP goals, assist in adapting to mainstream classrooms/workplaces, and ensure student success.
• Communicates with teachers and other professionals (e.g., Speech Therapist, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists) to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
• Documents student daily activities (e.g., behavior, completed assignments, on/off-task times) for daily logs and hourly activity records.
• Evaluates situations involving staff, students, parents, or the public to take action or provide referrals for resolution.
• Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team under the supervision of the assigned teacher to reinforce learning concepts.
• Maintains manual and electronic files/records to provide written reference and meet mandated requirements.
• Models conversation, manners, clean-up activities, listening, job skills, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
• Remains with the student at all times to ensure safety, remove the student when necessary, and de-escalate situations outside the classroom.
• Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

• Ability to interpret at a normal conversational rate in American Sign Language and Straight-English signing.
• Flexibility to work with others in varied circumstances, handle diverse data, and operate equipment using defined methods.
• Ability to work with a diverse range of individuals and data types, and utilize job-related equipment.
• Problem-solving skills to analyze issues and create action plans.
• Ability to work with detailed information, adjust to different levels of language usage, communicate with diverse groups, establish cooperative working relationships, meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality, and prioritize tasks.

Qualifications

• Job-related experience within a specialized field is required.
• Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in a job-related area.
• QAS rating Level 3 or RID Certification Equivalency.
• Valid Arizona DPS Level I IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
• Driver’s License and evidence of insurability.
• Online Driver Training Certification.
• MMR vaccination and Pre-Employment Proficiency Test.

Skills

• Operating standard office equipment and using pertinent software applications.
• Preparing and maintaining accurate records.
• Performing basic math, including algebra and/or geometry.
• Reading manuals, writing documents following prescribed formats, and presenting information to others.
• Understanding complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
• Knowledge of age-appropriate activities when working with high-risk youth, grammar and punctuation concepts, and methods of instruction and training.

Pay

$20.60 per hour.

Schedule

6.5 hours per day, 9-month interim position. Start date: 08/31/2026.

Work Environment

The role requires some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and fine finger dexterity. The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment, with approximately 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing.
