About the role
Virtual School is seeking a full-time Intervention Specialist.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate the activities of programs to improve student achievement and/or behavior.
- Work with licensed staff to facilitate the implementation of consistent/comprehensive curriculum within an academic achievement room.
- Provide tutoring support and work direction to students in a variety of subject areas.
- Communicate consistently with staff and parents regarding individual student progress; provide individual families with information about academic or behavior interventions, strategies for tutoring at home and/or information about other programs available within the District for students needing additional academic and/or behavior support.
- Provide behavior management training and coaching for classroom teachers and educational paraprofessionals, individually or in groups, as appropriate.
- Model classroom management techniques for teachers and paraprofessionals, both in role playing sessions and during class time when behavior incidents occur.
- Cookordinate and facilitate professional development for non-licensed staff in the area of tutoring.
- Cookordinate other school staff to provide additional student support in an academic achievement room, including licensed staff to provide instruction and non-licensed staff to tutor and assist with other non-instructional support activities.
- Develop communications to ensure that school staff is aware of academic achievement activities and/or behavior management techniques.
- Serve as a member of committees and/or teams working to resolve student academic progress or behavior issues; provide feedback to licensed staff regarding student progress in tutoring sessions; consult with licensed staff regarding tutorial and /or behavior management methods that best support academic achievement.
- Aid in the development and implementation of innovative methods for serving students needing additional academic and/or behavior support.
- Document information relating to student achievement or behavior issues to utilize in planning interventions.
- Maintain records of student academic achievement or behavioral referral data; generate reports for administrators as appropriate; analyze data to monitor student behavior trends in order to develop better intervention strategies.
- Attend district meetings and workshops.
- Respond to student inquiries relating to academic progress and provide them with supplemental support services.
- Contribute to the District's Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- One year of experience as a trainer/coach, program liaison, providing routine personal counseling services, facilitating support groups or providing educational staff support.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of urban education.
- Knowledge of barriers to learning.
- Knowledge of district and community resources available to assist students and their families with resolving academic achievement and/or behavioral problems.
- Knowledge of conflict resolution theories and methods.
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques.
- Excellent organizational, planning and coordination skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to interact effectively with persons from various cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Ability to maintain records, evaluate data, and prepare recommendations.
- Ability to work effectively, cooperatively and collaboratively with students, parents, school staff and administration.
